The condition of yawning, gasping for air or stretching the neck to yawn in chickens is a typical manifestation of ORT (also known as purulent pneumonia, yawning asthma). This is an acute respiratory failure disease in poultry with a high level of danger and the ability to spread. The disease is caused by the bacteria Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale.

ORT has a very short incubation period, usually only 1-3 days before the disease appears. The first symptoms are wheezing, coughing and sneezing. At this point, it is difficult to know which disease the chicken has because the above symptoms are very common. After 1-2 days, the chicken will be lethargic, stop eating, start gasping for air, have a runny nose and swollen eyelids. For chicks, when sick, there is a risk of sudden death due to cerebral hemorrhage and softening of the skull. For chickens over 12 weeks old, the disease will cause paralysis, osteomyelitis and death on the back.

When the disease develops after 5 days, if not treated, the chicken will gradually die and spread to all the remaining chickens. In addition, ORT in chickens can also be combined with other diseases such as CRD, Newcastle, IB, E. Coli, ILT... increasing the danger, the ability to spread as well as the mortality rate in chickens.

There is no specific treatment or vaccine for ORT. In addition, ORT bacteria are also very “strong” and resistant to antibiotics. However, if they have been fully vaccinated against other respiratory diseases, the rate of chickens contracting ORT is quite low and the cases are not too severe.

To treat this disease, you can refer to some of the following ways: supplement expectorant, vitamins, digestive enzymes and electrolyte water for chickens. Give chickens fever-reducing medicine containing paracetamol. Supplement antibiotics for chickens, especially respiratory antibiotics. Combine giving chickens garlic water according to the formula: 100g crushed garlic mixed with 10 liters of water, filter to get the residue. Give the water to drink directly instead of water every day, mix the residue into chicken feed. When 1 or some chickens are sick, use medicine and treat the whole flock.
