Returning after a year of almost no competition, Thao My entered the tournament with mixed emotions of excitement and anxiety. She admitted that she did not expect much, but was surprised to find strong motivation to complete all 18 holes on the opening day.
“Competing again in a new year, I really didn't think I had that much "fire" to be able to fight through today's round, especially when my health wasn't good,” Thao My shared after finishing round 1 with 75 strokes (+3), temporarily leading the women's table.
Throughout the day, Thao My made a few birdies from long distances, showing confidence and excitement. On difficult and challenging greens, she put the ball in favorable positions to open up scoring opportunities. However, the lack of practice time on windy courses like FLC Golf Links Quy Nhon revealed her limitations. Some tee shots were not calculated accurately, causing the ball to fall into unfavorable positions, affecting the overall strategy.
Among them, hole number 9 is considered by Thao My to be a real “trap”. The narrow fairway makes the tee shot always have to be carefully considered: if it deviates to the right, the ball will easily fall into the bunker, and if it deviates to the left, the risk of it being out of bounds is very high. “Standing on the tee box at hole 9, I often have to think twice. The second shot to score a goal is also extremely challenging, just a little deviation and the ball will go out”, Thao My said.

Looking back, Thao My was satisfied with the results of the first day. More than the achievement, she clearly felt the joy of returning to the peak competition atmosphere, facing challenges and conquering herself. "The most important thing when competing is to try your best, not to be discouraged, to show the fire within yourself and inspire the younger generation," Thao My affirmed.
The three-time National Women's Champion also appreciated the strong development of Vietnamese women's golf in recent years. According to her, the quality and number of athletes participating in tournaments are increasing, creating an attractive competitive picture and motivating each individual to make more efforts. "Everyone wants to win, but the important thing is the competitive spirit and how each person overcomes their own limits," Thao My shared.
From a young talent who won the National Youth Championship for three consecutive years (2014 - 2016), and three times at the National Women's Amateur Championship (2014, 2015, 2019), Nguyen Thao My is continuing her journey to affirm her mettle as a professional athlete. The opening round at the National Golf Championship - Gia Lai 2025 is clear evidence that the flame of passion in her is still burning, becoming a great source of inspiration for Vietnamese women's golf.
