At a meeting on Arctic developments on March 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the strategic importance of the region, while warning of Western moves that could increase the risk of conflict there.
"In the Arctic, in this strategic and important region, we are facing complex and large-scale tasks. We must strengthen transport and logistics infrastructure, expand economic and business opportunities, and protect the fragile Arctic ecosystems," the Russian President said.

At the same time, Mr. Putin expressed concern about the US plan to control Greenland. He affirmed that this was not a baseless statement from President Donald Trump's administration but a long-term strategy.
With its strategic location between North America and Europe, Greenland is becoming the focus of a struggle for influence among major powers, especially in the context of climate change opening up many new sea routes in the Arctic.
Russia has also warned that NATO is increasingly viewing the Arctic as a springboard for potential conflicts. Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO has increased the risk of militarization in the region. In response, Moscow has said it will not allow its sovereignty to be violated and is ready to “credibly” defend its national interests.
In addition to security concerns, Russia is also promoting economic cooperation in the Arctic, including the development of the Northern Sea Route – the shortest shipping route connecting Europe with the Asia-Pacific region. Russia has affirmed its readiness to cooperate with foreign partners, including the West, in exploiting resources and expanding economic projects in the region.
As the United States views the Arctic as a vital area for national security and is modernizing its military capabilities there, Russia has been rapidly strengthening its presence by reopening Soviet-era bases and upgrading its navy.
