The bridge will span the Tumen River connecting the two countries.
Russia and North Korea will soon start building a road bridge across the Tumen River connecting the two countries, state news agency RIA quoted Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang Alexander Matsegora as saying.
“The construction of the bridge has not yet begun. The parties are carrying out preparatory work, completing design documents, forming construction teams and preparing equipment,” Matsegora said. According to him, the road bridge will be 850 meters long and will connect to the Russian road system.
“South Korean satellite imagery analysis company SI Analytics said in a report on March 5 that construction work on the bridge foundation and approach roads appears to have begun,” Matsegora added.
The bridge is expected to create a sharp increase in economic, social and military exchanges between Russia and North Korea, which will lead to the gradual easing of international sanctions against North Korea and Russia, according to the report.
The bridge project was agreed upon during President Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea in 2024, when the two countries signed a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement.
The road bridge will be built near the existing "Friendship" railway bridge, which was put into use in 1959 after the Korean War.
According to Russian media, there used to be an ancient wooden bridge across the border in the early 20th century but it was destroyed./.
