On August 12, the ASEAN Summit on Artificial Intelligence (AAIMS25) officially opened in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The two-day event is seen as a major step forward in Southeast Asia’s digital transformation roadmap, aiming to promote a shared vision for sustainable and inclusive AI development.
With the theme "Promoting Sustainable and Inclusive Artificial Intelligence (AI) Development in ASEAN," the conference, hosted by Malaysia as ASEAN Chair, brought together more than 1,500 delegates including ASEAN ministers, policymakers, global technology leaders and entrepreneurs.
In his opening remarks, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar bin Ibrahim reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to shaping AI in line with the region’s values of fairness and dignity.

Notably, he introduced ILMU – Malaysia’s first homegrown major language model, built on local expertise and cultural depth.

In his speech, Malaysian Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stressed that the challenges and opportunities of AI are too great for any one country to tackle alone, and that only by working together can ASEAN chart a path that reflects shared values and aspirations.
On this occasion, a series of strategic initiatives to promote AI cooperation in the region were announced, such as the ASEAN Foundation, with the support of Google, launched the free learning platform AI Class ASEAN, aiming to train AI skills for 5.5 million people in the region.
MaiStorage also launched an affordable AI computing solution, making AI technology easily accessible to schools and small and medium-sized businesses.
Meanwhile, Huawei Technologies has launched the Asia- Pacific AI Ecosystem Initiative to train 30,000 AI professionals and support 200 local partners, aiming to make Malaysia a regional AI hub.
Also within the framework of the event, the Malaysian Ministry of Digital Affairs is expected to officially launch the National Cloud Computing Policy (NCCP) on August 13. This is an important milestone in Malaysia's efforts to build a sustainable, secure and forward-looking digital ecosystem that is "Cloud First"./.
