The Lao National Championship (Lao League) has recently brought a big shock to Southeast Asian football. The tournament's organizers announced new regulations on foreign players, each club is allowed to choose one of three options in the new season. In which, one option is to register to use foreign players, causing surprise with a maximum of 10 people in the next season.
Accordingly, option 1 , each club is allowed to register 10 foreign players, all of whom must be members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) - Asian foreign players. Each match will be allowed to use a maximum of 5 foreign players.
However, the condition is that the club must prove its financial capacity, with a statement of 139,000 USD or more, or have a license to participate in the AFC tournament.
Lao League plays big with 3 options for using foreign players for Lao football teams
Option 2 allows the registration of 6 foreign players, including 4 non-Asian players, 1 Asian player and 1 Southeast Asian player. Teams can use 5 players on the field at the same time without having to prove their finances.
Option 3 is regional and is facilitated by allowing up to 6 Southeast Asian players to be used and all 6 players can be on the field at the same time.
With this new regulation, Lao League becomes one of the few tournaments in the world that gives clubs the right to choose a foreign player model that suits the goals and potential of each team.
This will help ambitious teams competing in the AFC Champions League or the Southeast Asian Club Cup prioritize options 1 or 2 to optimize squad quality.
Meanwhile, financially constrained clubs can choose option 3 to take advantage of cheap players in the region.
The 2025-2026 Lao League will feature 10 teams, with 90 matches to be played. The 37th season of the Lao League will begin on August 16.
