According to Thanh Nien reporters, at noon on February 9 (December 30), the fields in Nghia Ha commune (Quang Ngai city), considered the largest gladiolus and chrysanthemum growing area in Quang Ngai province, were gloomy and deserted. Flower growers faced a year of crop failure.
Gladiolus flowers bloom all over the fields, but no one harvests them because the market is very slow.
The number of flowers blooming just before Tet can be counted on the fingers. Out of 10 trees, 9 bloom early.
Tet is coming, some farmers go to the fields to pick up budding flowers to sell to traders.
A flower grower said that a dozen gladiolus plants sell for 40,000 - 50,000 VND depending on the beauty of the flowers. With an average investment cost of about 20 million VND/sao, this is the fourth year that Nghia Ha gladiolus growers have lost revenue due to the weather.
Just like the gladiolus growers, the chrysanthemum growers are also depressed because of the lack of buyers. Instead of being sold on time for Tet, these flowers are still lying in the fields until the 30th of Tet.
Mr. Vo Hong Duong said that at this time, the price of chrysanthemums is around 1,000 VND/plant, but there are no buyers. In previous years, the price at this time was around 5,000 - 6,000 VND/plant.
Nghia Ha Commune is a famous Tet flower village in Quang Ngai Province. Every year, dozens of hectares of land are reserved by households to grow gladiolus, chrysanthemums and vegetables to supply the Tet market.
