Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that the department is researching the implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) in primary school admissions, expected to be applied from the 2026-2027 school year.

This will help calculate the distance from home to school, creating more favorable conditions for students and parents in traveling. At that time, students will be assigned to admission routes according to the digital map's positioning system.

"Through the positioning system, students can enroll in schools near their actual residence. This way, students will be able to attend schools near their homes instead of being assigned to wards as is currently the case. This will help reduce the burden on families, students and teachers," said Mr. Cuong.

Currently, Hanoi enrolls students at the primary level based on the school district. Students from a ward or commune will be able to study at the school in that area. However, many families in the border areas, although closer to schools in other wards, cannot study because they are not in the right district.

According to the head of the Department of Education and Training, when enrolling students using the new method, students will study at schools that are close to their homes, not according to the current zoning system, creating maximum convenience for families, students and teachers.

For new urban areas without schools, the department will propose to districts to take measures to resolve and promote the construction of schools. In addition, localities should pay attention to and arrange for children of families resettled due to land clearance, children of industrial park workers, families with preferential policies, and those in difficult circumstances to attend public schools.

This year, the Hanoi People's Committee has directed that the method and time for primary school enrollment remain the same as previous years. From July 1, public kindergartens and primary schools will enroll preschool children, first and sixth graders for the 2025-2026 school year.

The enrollment route previously divided by the People's Committee of the district, town, and city for each kindergarten and general school will also remain the same.

The Hanoi Department of Education and Training has also announced 30 phone numbers to support enrollment in preschool, grade 1, and grade 6. Parents can contact the phone number of the district, town, or city where their family resides to receive answers and support on issues related to enrollment registration for preschool, grade 1, and grade 6.

Parents of students log in to Hanoi's primary school admissions portal to register for admission online.
