Durian exports fall in rank, "overtaken" by dragon fruit and bananas

According to the latest statistics from the Customs Department, in the first two months of 2025, durian exports only reached 52.6 million USD, down more than 69% compared to the same period last year. After 2 years of holding the throne of the fruit and vegetable industry, durian suddenly fell to third place in the rankings, accounting for only about 7.7% of the total industry.

Meanwhile, dragon fruit took the lead with a turnover of 93.8 million USD, accounting for nearly 13.7%. Bananas also surprisingly surpassed durian when bringing in 71.6 million USD in two months, holding the second position and accounting for more than 10%.

The decline in durian is attributed to increasingly stringent technical barriers from the Chinese market, especially testing for cadmium and yellow O residues. This forces localities and exporting enterprises to review growing area codes, preservation systems, and traceability if they want to continue to maintain their advantage.

According to experts, in the short term, durian prices are unlikely to rebound due to the large amount of goods from the Southeast region entering the season. In addition, the pressure of slow exports has also caused warehouses to purchase sparingly, only selecting standard goods to ensure technical conditions.
Maintaining fruit quality, controlling residues and building local durian brands will be key for the durian industry to overcome the current ups and downs, especially when the export market is more "picky" than ever.
