Mr. Shin Tae-yong caused a big disappointment.

"If asked, I affirm that the capacity of the Indonesian team with coach Shin Tae-yong and the players in hand is enough to beat Myanmar, Laos, and the Philippines. If we lose to the Vietnamese team, it is normal for a team with many young players. If we try our best to reach the semi-finals and then lose, it is okay because we tried our best. However, the team did not complete the goal," said Mr. Erick Thohir in a statement posted on PSSI on December 22.

Mr. Erick Thohir also affirmed that there will be specific assessments of the performances of the Indonesian team and the decisions of coach Shin Tae-yong after the failure at the AFF Cup.

"This is certain. The coaches in the Indonesian team will all have their own specific explanations. That is in the contract. I cannot speak for each match, but I have to evaluate. Evaluate everything, I do not want to make mistakes, because success is thanks to good planning, good coaches, good players," the PSSI President emphasized.

Also according to Mr. Erick Thohir: "I said from the beginning that, at the AFF Cup, the goal of the Indonesian team is to give the best. If we talk about giving the best, with these coaches and players, we can at least reach the semi-finals of the AFF Cup. Therefore, with this defeat, of course, PSSI will conduct an assessment. This is also normal."

Meanwhile, coach Shin Tae-yong explained: "Not getting past the AFF Cup group stage is a failure, but it can be seen that this is not Indonesia's best team. If we used the strongest squad, the team would have won the championship. However, with the main players being young players, instead of talking about failure, I think this is a valuable experience for the players to help them mature further in the future."

Coach Shin Tae-yong also said: "The Indonesian team participating in the 2024 AFF Cup will be the main team competing in the 2026 AFC U-23 Championship qualifiers and the 2025 SEA Games. Therefore, Indonesian fans should not worry too much, they have gained valuable experience and will mature. That is also an additional resource for the team in the future."

In Group B of the 2024 AFF Cup (ASEAN Championship), the Indonesian team only won 1-0 against Myanmar, drew 3-3 with Laos, lost 0-1 to Vietnam, and lost 0-1 to the Philippines in the final match of the group stage. The team from the archipelago only ranked 3rd in the group stage with 4 points, and was eliminated early. The Philippines and Vietnam won 2 spots in the semi-finals.
