According to plan No. 335/KH-UBND of Hue City People's Committee, the goal of the restoration work of the national treasure Nguyen Dynasty Throne in the current period is to return it to the most similar state to the time of building the dossier of the object to propose recognition as a national treasure in 2015.
Restoration must be in accordance with museological principles, based on scientific and historical data; using appropriate measures, techniques and technologies to preserve the original elements to the maximum extent possible.
Restore the original details before the artifact was damaged, do not create additional patterns or motifs, do not renew the artifact, retain the original traces if it does not affect the structure. Use materials compatible with the original material; prioritize reusing techniques and materials that have been used in the creation of the artifact.
The restoration of the national treasure “Nguyen Dynasty Throne” must comply with the procedures, principles, and techniques of preservation and restoration and be in accordance with relevant customs, practices, and beliefs and must be carried out by qualified, skilled, and experienced people...
After restoration, the artifacts must ensure that the causes of damage are eliminated to the maximum extent, increasing their strength and durability; ensuring safety, and maintaining their original shape, size, and aesthetics.
The restoration of damaged details of the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne, must be carried out in accordance with approved design documents and current regulations on protection, preservation, and restoration of artifacts and national treasures. At the same time, restoration must be carried out at facilities with qualified technical conditions, equipment, and professional human resources.
All construction stages and materials used must be documented, recorded, filmed, and photographed for comparison, archival purposes, and reporting purposes.
The restoration process is expected to include 9 steps, including: preparing the restoration site; moving the treasure; scientific cleaning to clean the artifact and fragments; repositioning the fragments into a block; repositioning the complete artifact; stabilizing the lacquer and gilding layers; restoring the lacquer and gilding layers; protective coating and organizing acceptance.
After restoration, the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne, will be re-displayed in its original location at Thai Hoa Palace. The preservation plan for the treasure will be implemented in accordance with relevant national standards.
In 2015, when building the national treasure dossier, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne was damaged and degraded in many places, such as: the gilded surface was peeling; the right armrest was broken and temporarily reinforced with steel wire; the left armrest was cracked and the gilded layer was peeling; the joints of the throne surface were cracked and split; some decorative details on the back of the throne were no longer intact; there was wood rot on the throne surface...
In 2017, the Hue Museum of Royal Antiquities carried out minor repairs to the Nguyen Dynasty Throne by removing the steel and nails fixing the broken armrests, reinforcing them by using bamboo wedges to connect the broken parts, and attaching them with glue; repairing cracks and chips; and restoring small lost decorative details on the border under the right armrest.
On May 24, 2025, after being violated by Ho Van Phuong Tam, the national treasure Nguyen Dynasty Throne had part of the left arm broken and this part was smashed into 14 pieces. The rest of the treasure is still intact.
Hue City People's Committee assigned the Department of Culture and Information to review and appraise the content of the Plan to restore the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne, and submit it to the City People's Committee for promulgation under the guidance of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as prescribed. At the same time, advise the City People's Committee to establish a professional council to supervise the restoration process of this national treasure.
Assign the Hue Monuments Conservation Center to regularly monitor, report to the City People's Committee, the Professional Council, and supervise the restoration of the national treasure Nguyen Dynasty Throne. Report on current status records, technical designs, technical measures, construction logs, analysis documents, before/after photos, videos recording the entire construction process, appraisal results, acceptance reports... after completion.
Hue City leaders directed the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum to directly monitor, supervise, and coordinate with consulting units to establish technical designs and restoration plans for the national treasure, the Nguyen Dynasty Throne, to absorb and supplement any issues arising during the restoration process and submit them to relevant levels for appraisal and approval.
Direct the construction unit to preserve the original elements to the maximum extent, strictly following technical procedures. Any impact related to artifacts and national treasures must be under the inspection and approval of competent state agencies.
