Vietnamese businesses leverage AI to promote ESG, promote security and innovation

At the workshop “Implementing ESG with AI, what should businesses do?” co-organized by Dan Tri newspaper and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology this afternoon (August 14), many businesses shared their practical experiences when applying AI in ESG implementation.

Putting security and human innovation first when applying AI

Ms. Tran Phuong Nga, CEO of Thien Long Group, shared that the company is combining artificial intelligence with human knowledge to create a sustainable future. "The Group has shifted from a pure manufacturing company to the mission of "spreading the value of happiness and lifelong learning", starting from the internal working environment and then expanding to the community," she said.

The group's ESG strategy focuses on the message of "inspiring and providing comprehensive solutions for a lifelong journey of learning and happiness" with Eco-Style products made from environmentally friendly materials and a green lifestyle.

Thien Long Group's leaders said the company has implemented six initiatives, including optimizing green packaging design, applying AI robots to data entry, analyzing CSR (corporate social responsibility) content trends, automatically analyzing ESG data, and optimizing internal processes.

As an example of a specific AI application, Ms. Nga said that the group has used AI to evaluate and create images for CSR activities, helping to reduce repetitive work, shorten processing time, and improve employee satisfaction. "The company also organizes many internal training courses and applies AI in more transparent customer care. Our view is that applying AI in ESG will help businesses reduce costs and increase efficiency," Ms. Nga said.

Although there is no detailed legal corridor, the group's leaders said they still comply with the group's general rules, ensuring ethical and copyright principles when applying AI.

According to the group's leaders, Thien Long works with AI based on two core principles. The first is information security, building internal AI models based on open models, and applying strict regulations to prevent data leaks, in accordance with current laws.

In addition, comply with intellectual property rights, limit dependence on AI to protect creativity and human intelligence; ensure that products are formed mainly from human intelligence and effort to be legally protected.

Ms. Nga emphasized that in the context of Vietnam perfecting the legal framework on AI, businesses need to proactively pay attention to legal factors to prevent and minimize risks.

AI brings many benefits

From the perspective of an FDI enterprise, Ms. Nguyen Thi Van Khanh, Deputy General Director of Gamuda Land Vietnam, said that the group has committed to implementing ESG from 2021 with a specific plan for a 5-year cycle, aiming for a net zero emission target by 2050.

According to Ms. Khanh, AI brings many benefits such as automation, personalization, improving work efficiency, supporting fast and accurate decision making, saving operating costs, as well as making processes transparent and preventing fraud.

"However, the application of AI also poses four major challenges including high technology investment costs and the need to maintain them for many years; lack of specialized AI human resources, difficulty attracting top talent; data security and privacy issues; and difficulty assessing long-term impacts when technology changes rapidly," she said.

To meet internal needs, Gamuda Land Vietnam's leaders cited that the company has developed the AI Chatbot "Gamuda Bot UNIFY" to support employees in looking up information about the group. After 3 months of operation, this chatbot has processed more than 9,000 requests, served 186 users with more than 2,600 valuable responses and will continue to be trained and upgraded.

"In addition, Gamuda Land Vietnam also applies AI in evaluating, analyzing and managing data of infrastructure projects, prioritizing the development of green ecosystems, focusing on designing natural circulation of sunlight and wind to create added value for customers. The power of AI is maximized when it is managed transparently and applied responsibly," Ms. Khanh emphasized.

At the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duc Trung, Principal of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, also emphasized that AI is strongly supporting many management stages.

"At the school, each staff member has their own AI, which helps with planning, data analysis, personnel optimization, purchasing, distribution, risk management, and even automatically finding and screening suitable candidates so that staff only need to interview. AI also participates in analyzing customer behavior to personalize services, automatically respond, calculate inventory, and coordinate goods on time," he cited.

Mr. Trung believes that AI cannot replace humans in the near future, but will accompany as a “friend”, supporting the achievement of dual goals: Digital transformation and green transformation. AI helps build ESG reports, points out shortcomings, thereby improving the effectiveness of governance and sustainable development of the organization.
