President Biden's son convicted on 3 counts in historic ruling

CNN reported on June 11 that a federal jury in the United States has just convicted Mr. Hunter Biden (54 years old) of three serious crimes, saying that he violated the law prohibiting drug addicts from owning guns.

This is the first time in US history that a son of a sitting president has been criminally prosecuted. The indictment was brought by the Justice Department , specifically by David Weiss, the special prosecutor appointed last year to oversee the investigation into Joe Biden's son.

Hunter Biden is accused of illegally purchasing and illegally possessing a gun while abusing or addicted to drugs, in violation of federal law. He denies all charges.

When buying a gun, buyers must fill out a form from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives certifying that they are legally allowed to purchase the weapon. Hunter Biden has been charged with lying on those forms.

Mr Biden owned the gun for 11 days in October 2018, before his girlfriend threw it in the trash out of concern for his mental health.

According to Washington DC attorney Nabeel Kibria, who has defended defendants in hundreds of gun-related cases, guns are dangerous if they fall into the wrong hands.

“The evidence against Mr. Hunter seems to be quite overwhelming, but who determines who is an addict? What are the rules that need to be followed?” the lawyer asked.

If convicted on all three counts, Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison. The judge did not set a sentencing date, but added that it is typically within 120 days.
