Almost had to have breast removed because of breast augmentation with fillers

After giving birth to her first child, Ms. NTL (19 years old, in Hoa Binh ) found that her breasts had shrunk significantly. Believing in the advertisement of a spa for non-surgical breast augmentation, Ms. L. was advised to inject fillers into her breasts. After the injection, she began to experience symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, and then signs of chills and fever.

Ms. L. was taken to the emergency room at a hospital, fortunately her condition was stable. However, afterwards, she still had pain and swelling, a lot of lumps in her chest, swelling, heat and fever. Ms. L. went to Viet Duc Hospital for examination.

Doctor Nguyen Hong Ha, head of the maxillofacial - plastic - cosmetic surgery department, Viet Duc Hospital, said that in this case, the girl may have to have both breasts removed due to infection from the filler.

"The patient is only 19 years old and wants to have children in the future, so having to remove her breasts would be a very serious complication," Dr. Ha shared.

This poses a challenge for doctors, how to remove as much of this infected filler from the woman's body as possible without affecting function, the ability to raise children, and ensuring aesthetics.

Doctors used modern endoscopic surgery, combined with a multi-plane color ultrasound system during cesarean section to remove most of the lumpy fillers from the patient's chest.

"With just a small incision, it is aesthetically optimal and has little impact on the mammary glands. Doctors have applied advanced techniques to retain mammary gland function, helping patients to continue being mothers and producing milk for their children in the future.

With this technique, doctors can safely remove up to 90-95% of filler, helping patients recover quickly and maintain breast function," Dr. Ha added.

One week after Ms. L.'s breast reconstruction surgery, ultrasound results showed that the fillers had been almost completely removed from her breasts.

Increased risk of cancer

According to Dr. Ha, injecting filler, also known as injecting filler into the breast, is an act that is not permitted under the regulations of the Ministry of Health .

"Injecting substances of unknown origin into the chest can cause many dangerous complications. Immediately, a blood vessel blockage can occur, the injected substance can move to the brain or lungs and cause a blockage in these organs. This is rare but very dangerous, and can threaten the patient's life.

In addition, injecting substances of unknown origin at unlicensed facilities also increases the risk of infection.

Many patients after getting filler injections at spas of unknown origin often have fever, chills, infections or pus discharge from the injection site," Dr. Ha shared.

According to Dr. Ha, some people used to inject liquid silicone into their breasts, but this substance has long been banned. Currently, some smuggled and unlicensed products such as artificial fat are used for injection into the body.

These substances are of unknown origin and unsafe, especially when injected into the mammary gland, a tissue that functions to secrete milk and has a high risk of causing cancer.

In some cases, the infection can persist and cause painful swelling, lumps, or even pus to drain from the breast through fistulas. These conditions can be long-lasting and very difficult to treat.

Many patients have to go to the hospital for long-term treatment, even having to have their entire breasts removed.

Doctors recommend that before deciding to increase breast size, you should learn carefully about safe and effective methods. Methods recognized by the Ministry of Health and world medicine include breast augmentation by surgery.
