These days, on the airwaves of Voice of Vietnam and social media platforms, songs written about special events are resounding. Some of the songs include “The First Spring” by Van Cao; “The Country is Full of Joy” by Hoang Ha; “As if Uncle Ho were with us on the Great Victory Day” by Pham Tuyen…
The works all have a heroic tone, expressing the extreme joy of the Vietnamese people when the war ended and the country was reunited. The country entered spring - the beginning of the year - with many new hopes.
"Spring in Ho Chi Minh City" is one of the famous songs by musician Xuan Hong, composed right after April 30, 1975. Musician Xuan Hong once composed the song "Spring in the war zone" to encourage fighting spirit, now he writes about the spring of peace, marking a new historical milestone.
The author chose a strong 2/4 rhythm, clear lyrics, expressing faith in a bright future. The song's tempo is fast, the melody is lively, imbued with the colors of a cheerful march. The author also uses a conductor's tone, giving listeners a feeling of joy and excitement, suitable for the theme of praising the new spring and the development of the country.
To write these innocent and playful lyrics, the author was very excited and enthusiastic, wanting to spread his overflowing joy to everyone. Happy people, happy scenes, all things were cheerful and excited: Star-studded flags fluttering high/ Green trees blooming with leaves and flowers/ The water in the Ben Nghe River is clearer/ The market is more crowded, the Ben Thanh market is more joyful/… The song only has 2 short stanzas and a chorus, easy to remember, easy to arrange for solo, group, and chorus singing. That is also the reason why after its release, the song was quickly accepted and widely popularized by the public.
I am very happy and proud because this country and Saigon city have just been named after Uncle Ho, and have written the "Epic of a Thousand Years of Glory, Famous Forever".
The meaning of the Great Victory Day has been affirmed by our Party: “Years will pass, but the victory of our people in the resistance war against the US to save the country will forever be recorded in our national history as one of the most brilliant pages, a shining symbol of the complete victory of revolutionary heroism and human intelligence, entering world history as a great feat of the 20th century, an event of great international importance and profound epochal significance.”
Musician Xuan Hong was born in 1928 (died in 1996), and spent many years in Ho Chi Minh City. His real name is Nguyen Hong Xuan, from Chau Thanh, Tay Ninh, and he joined the revolution in the early years of the resistance war against the French. In 1960, he became a political commissar and Head of the Liberation Army's Art Troupe.
In 1967, he gathered in the North, studied at the Vietnam Music School, then returned to the battlefield to continue his activities. After 1975, he was Head of the Stage Arts Department of the Department of Culture, Vice President of the City Arts Association, General Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association, and Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Musicians Association, term IV.
He is famous for many songs such as "The Song of Sewing a Shirt", "Spring in the War Zone", "The Sound of Pestle on Bom Bo Hamlet", "Spring by the Window", "The Guitar of the Third Company", "My Mother"...
The work "Spring in Ho Chi Minh City" is one of six typical works that brought him the Ho Chi Minh Prize for Literature and Arts (in 2000).
