Starting from challenges

Many years ago, Thai Nguyen City faced a difficult problem: rapid urbanization, causing green land to increasingly shrink. Many vacant lots in central wards such as Hoang Van Thu, Tuc Duyen, Phan Dinh Phung... became places for spontaneous garbage dumping, causing pollution. Not only that, the big challenge lies in the fragmented planning work, lacking a comprehensive strategy for green tree development.

Faced with the above situation, Thai Nguyen City has embarked on a roadmap to create green spaces: systematic planning, diversifying resources. The city has consulted with urban experts and functional departments to plan green parks with a total area of ​​691 hectares, in key areas such as Linh Son Park, with an expected scale of 105 hectares, and an estimated total investment of VND 2,650 billion.

This park is designed in a multi-functional direction, combining entertainment, sports and ecological conservation spaces. The green tree line along Cau River, expected to cover an area of ​​about 500 hectares, aims to form a green belt to protect water resources, while connecting residential areas from Son Cam to Dong Lien.

Urban park cluster, including planned areas in Gia Sang ward (25ha), western urban area (45ha) and southern area (65ha).

The central streets of Thai Nguyen city are covered with many kinds of trees.

Along with that, the city has mobilized resources, from using the budget to the cooperation of the whole community to implement green park projects and works. Among them are typical projects such as: Renovating the green sidewalk at Tan Lap intersection (total investment of 137 billion VND); building the landscape behind Vo Nguyen Giap Square (investment capital of 200 billion VND) ...

The first "green lungs"

After nearly 4 years of implementing Directive No. 13/CT-UBND dated June 17, 2021 of the Provincial People's Committee Chairman on management and promotion of urban green tree development, Thai Nguyen City has achieved many remarkable results.

Notably, the city has completed and put into use 4 green parks and flower beds in central wards (Tuc Duyen, Phan Dinh Phung, Hoang Van Thu, Quan Trieu) with a total area of ​​6,334m2, with an investment cost of 9 billion VND from the budget.

The green parks and flower beds put into operation have brought positive changes to the green space of the city. From vacant land to "green lungs" with lush trees, gyms and bustling children's playgrounds. This place has become an indispensable community activity spot for residents.

Ms. Ngo Tieu Linh, in Hoang Van Thu ward, excitedly shared: Since the park was built in the area, every afternoon there are many people coming to exercise, children playing, the environment is much fresher.

In the journey of efforts to create green spaces, Thai Nguyen City has mobilized the strong participation of the entire political system and the people. Every year, state agencies actively respond to the tree planting movement with remarkable results.

From 2021 to present, Thai Nguyen City has planted 140,000 new trees (reaching 93% of the plan of the Project "Planting 1 billion new trees in the period of 2021-2025" launched by the Prime Minister), in which, state agencies and units contributed about 40% of the number of trees planted.

Mr. Nguyen Hai Quan, Secretary of the Thai Nguyen City Youth Union, said: The Youth Union clearly identifies its pioneering role in developing urban trees. In 2024, we mobilized members to plant over 25,000 new trees through the movements "One member, one tree", "Youth self-managed route"... This is not only an environmental protection activity but also an education for the younger generation.

Every year, Thai Nguyen City spends about 10 billion VND to take care of urban trees.

Target 12m2 of green space/person

With an impressive urban green tree system, including 18,000m2 of flower beds, 44,000m2 of lawns, 4,500 ornamental plants, more than 8,000 shade trees..., Thai Nguyen City has achieved 8.9m2 of green trees/person, exceeding the standard of a type I urban area. However, it does not stop there, the city sets a target that by 2030, the green tree index will reach 12m2/person.

Architect Vu Nguyen Binh, Thai Nguyen Young Architects Club: The green tree index of 8.9m2/person is a positive sign showing that Thai Nguyen City is on the right track in sustainable urban development.

To realize this goal, the city has implemented many synchronous solutions. Regarding planning, Thai Nguyen City focuses on developing large parks, such as Linh Son, the green tree line along Cau River, and at the same time, taking advantage of all vacant land to create more urban "green areas".

Ms. Tran Thi Ngan, a resident of Trung Vuong ward, excitedly said: I strongly support the program "One person, one tree". My family has planted many trees and voluntarily taken care of the flower road in front of our house.

In addition to mobilizing the community to plant 150,000 trees by 2025, the city's future goal is to apply modern technology to manage trees and automatically save water. However, the biggest difficulty of the city today is limited land fund and limited investment capital, it is necessary to mobilize social resources and investment resources from businesses to develop green spaces.

With strong political determination and consensus of the people, Thai Nguyen City is gradually realizing its aspiration to become a model "green city" of the Northern region, where every street and every corner is covered with shade from trees, contributing to improving the quality of life and creating a harmonious urban identity between development and environmental protection.
