Boy's cornea torn after being poked in the eye with a stick

VnExpressVnExpress18/01/2024

Hanoi While playing, a 5-year-old boy was poked in the right eye by a friend with a stick, tearing his cornea and causing a cataract.

The child was taken to Hanoi Eye Hospital 2 with red, painful eyes. The examination results showed that the child had a torn cornea, a dislocated lens due to trauma, and a torn Zinn ligament for about 2 hours. The child was given corneal sutures, anti-infective treatment, and post-trauma monitoring. One month after the cornea healed, the child will have surgery to replace the dislocated lens.

On January 18, Dr. Mai Thi Anh Thu, Hanoi Eye Hospital 2, said that being stabbed in the eye is a serious ophthalmological injury. If not treated properly at the beginning, it will directly affect vision with a high risk of infection, and can even lead to complete loss of vision. This child was not stabbed too deeply in the eye, and was treated promptly, so the cornea was preserved.

However, patients need to monitor their vision after the injury, because when the eye has corneal scarring, it will cause astigmatism. For young children, parents need to observe and monitor, absolutely do not let the child rub or rub the eyes, clean the eyes and use medication as prescribed by the doctor. In addition, the child may be given an eye patch for the first few days after surgery to limit dirt and the habit of touching the eyes.

Patients also need to have regular check-ups according to the doctor's appointment or immediately when there are unusual signs, to prevent dangerous complications that may occur such as inflammatory reactions, open surgical wounds, new lens dislocation...

In fact, many patients think that after surgery, the treatment is complete and ignore the doctor's follow-up appointment. Only when vision is reduced, eye pain persists, eyes are red, black spots appear before the eyes, nausea, then they return for a follow-up appointment, affecting the effectiveness and prolonging the treatment time.

"The eye after cataract surgery can stabilize within 8 weeks if the instructions are followed correctly," said Dr. Thu.

Doctors recommend that young children who are not yet aware of danger should never play with sharp objects that can cause serious injury to the eyes. Teach children how to prevent accidents; immediately notify teachers and parents if they experience eye injuries for timely treatment to avoid serious consequences.
