Apple is expanding iPhone production in India to supply the US market, in an effort to reduce its dependence on China amid volatile global trade.
According to Bloomberg , the company has put all four iPhone 17 models into assembly in India ahead of their September launch. This is the first time that all variants, including the Pro version, are being manufactured in the South Asian country from the start.
The move is tied to Apple’s expansion of its factories in India, including the Tata Group’s facility in Hosur and the Foxconn plant near Bangalore airport. Tata is playing an increasingly large role in the supply chain, expected to account for half of India’s iPhone production within the next two years.
iPhone exports from India have also surged. In the first four months of the new fiscal year, the value of shipments reached $7.5 billion , nearly half the $17 billion for the entire previous fiscal year.
Apple is also expanding its production in India to avoid tariffs on goods from China. The company said it could lose $1.1 billion due to tariffs in the current period. The US government under President Donald Trump has imposed high tariffs on many products, but the iPhone has so far been exempt. CEO Tim Cook also recently emphasized that the majority of iPhones sold in the US will be imported from India.
In parallel, Apple continues to develop new products. The iPhone 17 is expected to have a thin and light design with a powerful camera system. In addition, the company plans to produce the iPhone 17e in India for launch in 2026 and is discussing plans to accelerate production of the iPhone 18.
Apple began assembling iPhones in India in 2017 with the iPhone SE. By 2021, partners like Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron had taken advantage of subsidies from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to expand. Tata is now the sole domestic assembler, after acquiring Wistron’s plant in Karnataka and taking a controlling stake in a Pegatron facility in Chennai.
Apple’s increased presence in India reflects its long-term strategy to diversify its supply chain and reduce its dependence on China. At the same time, the tech giant also takes advantage of the potential of the local market and labor resources.
