Cam Lo Commune: Commemorating the 140th anniversary of King Ham Nghi's Can Vuong Edict

140 years ago, on July 13, 1885, after the fall of Hue Citadel, King Ham Nghi - a young but patriotic king, and his loyal ministers went to Son Phong Tan So (in Mai Dan village, Cam Lo commune).

Here, King Ham Nghi issued the Can Vuong Edict, calling on the people to rise up against the French colonialists. The Can Vuong Edict was a call to all people, "whoever has the strength, use it, whoever has money, contribute it", to stand up to help the king save the country. That call sparked hundreds of uprisings, gathering tens of thousands of patriotic scholars to rise up against the colonial regime.

From Thanh Tan So, the flame of patriotism flared up, arousing national pride and quickly spreading throughout the three regions of the country; from the mountains to the plains, gathering thousands of patriotic scholars to peasants in plain clothes, all responding to the call of the country, writing heroic and indomitable songs, amidst countless dangers.

The Can Vuong Edict was not only a call from a young patriotic king, but also a sacred call from the Fatherland in a time of danger. With its heroic spirit, it symbolizes patriotism, national unity and the will to not submit to foreign invasion. It is a great spiritual heritage, laying the foundation for later patriotic movements from Dong Du, Duy Tan to the successful August Revolution.

In a solemn and emotional atmosphere, the Party Committee, government and people of Cam Lo commune offered incense to commemorate and pay tribute to the ancestors who sacrificed for the great cause. At the same time, they vowed to continue to promote the revolutionary tradition, unite as one, preserve and promote the national cultural identity; promote the construction and development of the homeland to become more and more beautiful and civilized, worthy of the land of the Resistance Capital.
