Vietnam wins big at AIMO 2025 Asian Mathematical Olympiad

On August 5, the Asian Mathematical Olympiad Committee announced the results of the international final round of the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO) 2025 at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (Japan). The Vietnamese delegation with 22 members all won prizes, including 1 Champion prize, the highest score in the high school exam.

In addition, the Vietnamese delegation also won 10 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 4 bronze medals.

Outstandingly winning the Champion award, Phan Thanh Huy, a 12th grade student at Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, shared that he came to the AIMO 2025 competition partly because of his passion for mathematics and partly because he wanted to experience the international mathematics arena.

Having prepared carefully and having participated in math competitions, I entered the competition with a fairly stable mentality. However, the Champion award was still a happy surprise. I would like to express my gratitude to the AIMO 2025 organizing committee, the instructors, parents and fellow students during the competition. For me, this was a very memorable and unforgettable experience.

Tran Son Ha, a 6th grader at Dang Thai Mai Secondary School in Nghe An Province, confided that he had studied hard to prepare for the competition. When he read the exam questions, he found them quite difficult and nervous. Therefore, the gold medal result surprised him greatly.

AIMO is a competition organized annually by the AIMO International Executive Committee - Asian Mathematical Olympiad Association since 2012. This is one of the most prestigious and largest international math competitions in English in the region.

With more than 20 participating countries and territories such as China, Singapore, Korea, Malaysia, Iran, India... AIMO has quickly become a place to affirm the thinking and foreign language abilities of hundreds of thousands of students each year.

The special feature of AIMO is that the test is entirely in English and divided into three parts with increasing difficulty, requiring candidates to not only master mathematical knowledge but also analyze, debate, and explain problems using logical thinking and academic language. Each AIMO test is not simply a test, but a challenge of thinking - where students must maximize their ability to reason, be creative, and respond quickly.

Vietnam joined AIMO in 2019 and quickly affirmed its position with hundreds of medals. According to statistics, Vietnamese students have won more than 200 international medals in AIMO. These numbers not only demonstrate the efforts of students but also reflect the right direction of Vietnamese general education in focusing on developing students' thinking and foreign languages.

The AIMO 2025 Finals in Japan attracted more than 3,500 contestants from 21 Asian countries and territories. Next year, Vietnam will host the 2026 Finals.
