Smart stamp application against counterfeit books

VnExpressVnExpress15/05/2023

CheckVN Book's origin tracing solution is applied by Science and Technology Publishing House to help distinguish genuine books from fake books, pirated books, and prevent copyright infringement of authors and works.

The information was shared by Mr. Bui Minh Cuong, Director and Editor-in-Chief of Science and Technology Publishing House at the launching ceremony of new books applying smart anti-counterfeit stamps to publications and announcing activities to celebrate Vietnam Science and Technology Day, which took place on the afternoon of May 15 in Hanoi.

Mr. Cuong said that counterfeit books, pirated books, and intellectual property infringement seriously affect the rights and legitimate interests of publishers, book distribution companies, and authors. Smart anti-counterfeit stamps (CheckVN Book) for publications and cultural products have been developed to help users have a convenient tool to authenticate the authenticity/fakeness of publications, find multi-dimensional information, and know the process of book formation. The solution helps trace the origin to prevent copyright infringement of authors and works and prevent counterfeit goods. "Currently, the Science and Technology Publishing House has issued 1,000 sets of stamps for printed publications," Mr. Cuong said.

Accordingly, each book has its own code that helps readers interact with the publisher. Buyers will scan the QR code with their mobile phones and check the information, scratch the security layer to check authenticity, and enter authentication information when paying. With this method, readers can buy genuine publications from the publisher and confirm ownership of the book thanks to the smart stamp attached to the book.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Xuan Dinh said that 1,000 sets of books with smart stamp codes are still a very small number compared to the actual demand. He hopes that publishers will coordinate with technology companies to develop anti-counterfeiting technology on digital publishing platforms to protect intellectual property rights in the digital environment. "If there is an electronic version, it will help users access faster and more effectively and not be left behind in the digital transformation trend," the Deputy Minister suggested.

He also acknowledged that the Science and Technology Publishing House has made many efforts during its 60 years of establishment and development, affirming its position as the leading scientific and technical book publishing establishment in the country, building close relationships with authors, scientists and research training institutions.

The electronic anti-counterfeiting system for publications, based on Checkvn origin tracing and authentication technology, was developed by the Science and Technology Publishing House in collaboration with a number of units. This is a quick response information system, including stamps containing two-layer security QR codes, combined with mobile devices with installed applications to access a data center with five independently managed databases containing information about publishers, stamp codes and authenticated products.

When users scan the QR code with their mobile phones, the signal is sent to the data center to authenticate the codes. Through steps such as checking information and scratching the security layer, the system will return the result of whether the product is genuine or not. CheckVN technology was granted an exclusive patent in 2016. Before being applied to the publishing sector, CheckVN technology was officially applied to build a traceability platform for the entire agricultural sector from 2021.
