Speaking to the audience at a launch event in New York, Alexa Plus declared: "I'm not just an assistant. I'm your new best friend in the digital world."
An upgrade over the current Alexa, which is mostly used for relatively simple tasks like playing music, predicting the weather, or turning on the lights in a room, Alexa Plus is more of a virtual agent capable of performing actions on command. Demonstrations at the event showed Alexa Plus being able to perform tasks like booking concert tickets, sending text messages, planning trips, updating shared calendars, and even analyzing security camera footage to determine if someone has been walking their dog.
Notably, thanks to the new functions of generative AI, Alexa Plus can compose a story from pre-selected characters or compose a song according to an assigned theme.
Amazon hopes that with the upgraded version with flexible conversational capabilities, Alexa Plus will attract hundreds of millions of users to switch from Alexa to paid service packages, helping to create profitable revenue for the virtual assistant business.
Alexa Plus is expected to launch in the US in April for $19.99/month, or free for Amazon Prime subscribers.
PP Foresight analyst Paolo Pescatore believes that with the launch of Alexa Plus, AI will reach a wider audience. However, the coverage of this technology is creating certain concerns for users, especially about trust and information security.
In addition to Amazon, many other major technology companies are also trying to expand AI applications in daily activities through development investments of up to billions of dollars. Microsoft also just provided an audio version of Copilot, while Google launched Gemini AI, and Apple is trying to improve Siri with generative AI.
