On the afternoon of April 28, at the request of Malaysia - the current ASEAN Chair, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a phone call with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss bilateral cooperation and a number of regional and international issues.
During the phone call, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the two Prime Ministers' regular sharing of information and effective coordination on issues of mutual concern, demonstrating the close and trustworthy Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries in general and between the two sides' senior leaders in particular.
Also during the phone call, the Malaysian Prime Minister updated Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on the measures Malaysia - in its capacity as ASEAN Chair - has implemented to promote the resolution of regional issues raised during the phone call on April 6.
In particular, Malaysia has conducted dialogue with relevant parties in Myanmar, urging parties to extend the ceasefire to focus on humanitarian relief after the disaster; and discussed ASEAN's common approach to strengthen trade and investment relations with partners, ensuring and promoting ASEAN's central role.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the efforts of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as well as the important role of Malaysia as ASEAN Chair in promoting the resolution of regional issues; emphasizing that ASEAN needs to play a leading role in resolving the Myanmar issue, continuing to unite and coordinate with Myanmar to overcome the consequences of the earthquake and in the recovery and reconstruction process later, through existing ASEAN mechanisms such as the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA) and the ASEAN Secretary General.
The Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam will continue to strongly promote its role as an active and responsible member in ASEAN, support and closely coordinate with Malaysia during the year Malaysia holds the ASEAN Chairmanship as well as successfully organize upcoming important ASEAN conferences.
The two Prime Ministers agreed to maintain an effective information exchange and coordination mechanism to deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership as well as build a united, unified ASEAN that plays a central role in the region.
