According to fishermen in the coastal areas of Duc Minh commune (Mo Duc district, Quang Ngai province), after storms and strong seas, fish and many other types of seafood are also in abundance in the coastal waters. In addition, when the weather is bad, seafood prices also increase, thus "stimulating" fishermen to go out to sea. |
To get their boats out to sea, fishermen here have to risk their lives to overcome large waves 3-5m high, making anyone who witnesses them fear for their safety. |
Despite knowing the danger, many fishermen still gamble to make a living. |
Most of the fishermen's boats have less than 20 horsepower and usually fish about 5 nautical miles from shore. Small boats have 1-2 people, large boats have 5 people, they are mostly brothers or relatives. |
They start going to sea from 4am to 8am and return. However, because there is a lot of seafood coming ashore these days, they try to go out to sea 2-3 times a day. |
As soon as the boat reached shore, the fishermen's wives also rushed out to help their husbands and children bring the boat deeper into shore to avoid the big waves. |
On average, after each trip at sea, a fisherman can earn from 700,000 VND to 1 million VND. On lucky days, each fisherman can earn 2-3 million VND. |
Fisherman Tran Quyen (residing in Duc Minh commune, Mo Duc district) said that going to sea this season is very difficult and dangerous because of big waves, but in return, there is a lot of seafood at high prices, so all fishermen here are interested. |
“This season, when the sea is rough, there are more fish and shrimp than in calm months. Today, we went out to sea twice and earned 3 million VND. Although we know that going out to sea this season often encounters many uncertainties, we fishermen have to take the risk to make a living,” said fisherman Duong Nhi (residing in Duc Minh commune, Mo Duc district). |
Although the income after going out to sea during the rough sea season is many times higher than on normal days, not all fishermen dare to "test their courage" with the rough waves, because uncertainties always lurk... |
"There have been many unfortunate accidents, some minor ones are boats capsizing and fishing gear drifting away, some serious ones can cost our lives and unsuccessful trips to sea are not uncommon," said fisherman Nguyen Hieu. |

Fish are brought ashore, classified and sold to traders. |
