Ministry of Education and Training plans to make AI an official subject

TPO - The Ministry of Education and Training advised the Government to submit to the Politburo a Resolution on educational breakthroughs, including making AI an official subject in the General Education Program.

On the afternoon of August 22, the Ministry of Education and Training held a conference to summarize the 2024-2025 school year and deploy tasks for the new school year.

Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son said: In the 2024-2025 school year, the entire sector has completed the school year plan with many positive results. The 2025 high school graduation exam was organized safely, seriously and objectively. The quality of key education continues to be affirmed with high results in national and international exams.

The issue of training human resources, especially high-quality human resources in industries such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, and technology 4.0, is strongly promoted. The team of teachers and educational managers is interested in and developed in both quantity and quality.

However, the industry still faces difficulties and challenges. Among them, the shortage of teachers is still common in many localities, especially for new subjects in disadvantaged areas; the quality of vocational education and university quality still does not fully meet the needs of the labor market.

The report of the Ministry of Education and Training stated that the unit has organized research and developed a Project to make English the second language in schools to submit to the Prime Minister for consideration and promulgation; advised the Government to submit to the Politburo to issue a Resolution on educational breakthroughs, in which AI becomes an official subject in the General Education Program.

Localities have actively reviewed and planned the network of schools and classrooms, focusing on investing in facilities and teaching equipment. Currently, the Ministry of Education and Training is developing a national target program to modernize and improve the quality of education and training for the period 2026-2035.

The Ministry also pointed out difficulties and shortcomings in implementing the new program; some educational institutions were confused and not really proactive in organizing the teaching of integrated subjects; testing and evaluation towards developing students' capacity in some places were still formal.

The work of educating children, pupils and students on ethics, lifestyle and life skills; the work of supporting, providing psychological counseling, and skills to prevent and combat violence, bullying and child and pupil abuse are not really effective. School violence and food insecurity in schools still occur in some educational institutions, causing public outrage.

The quality of the teaching staff is uneven among regions; there is still a shortage of schools, subject classrooms and minimal teaching equipment in some localities.

In the 2025-2026 school year, the Ministry of Education and Training determined to effectively implement 2-session teaching/day for general education institutions; improve the quality of STEM/STEAM education, digital capacity development education, and artificial intelligence education; and prepare good conditions to ensure that English gradually becomes the second language in schools.

Recruit and utilize all assigned teacher positions for the 2022-2026 period; review the current number of teachers, propose to supplement teacher positions for the 2026-2030 period to overcome the shortage of teachers.

Research and develop a mechanism for coordination, mobilization, and contracting with foreign artisans, artists, professional athletes, and volunteers to participate in organizing educational activities in schools, especially in the fields of culture, arts, sports, life skills, etc. for high school students.

Improve the quality of human resource training, especially high-quality human resources associated with scientific research and innovation.
