Climate change adaptation in Ba Ria

In recent years, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has been affected by climate change, which not only hinders economic development but also leads to unpredictable disasters for people's lives, most clearly demonstrated through the increase in unusual weather phenomena, natural disasters that no longer follow the law, and extreme climate patterns.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Vinh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province said: Recently, facing the complicated developments of climate change, the Provincial People's Committee has assigned relevant departments, branches and localities to synchronously implement solutions to proactively prevent natural disasters, minimize damage caused by climate change, thereby contributing to helping the locality achieve the goal of sustainable poverty reduction.

Investing in a number of projects to prevent coastal erosion has initially minimized the impact of climate change, especially rising sea levels.

Accordingly, in addition to focusing on promoting on-site climate change response experience and the role of authorities at all levels and grassroots mass organizations; functional sectors of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province also focus on implementing projects, such as the project "Assessing the impact of climate change on flooding in the province and action plan to respond to climate change in flood prevention and mapping of flood risk zones due to rain"; and the project "overcoming erosion and sedimentation in coastal and river areas"; implementing dike projects using soft technology Stabiplage and non-metallic reinforced concrete technology...; constructing storm shelters. At the same time, localities in the province have also focused on transforming crop and livestock structures, changing the scope and scale of production, applying technology transfer... to adapt to climate change.

Poverty reduction service

Mr. Nguyen Cong Vinh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province said: According to research results and warnings from scientific experts, the increase in extreme weather phenomena in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province in the coming time will continue to occur and have more serious impacts. Therefore, in order to proactively respond effectively, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has developed an Action Program to respond to climate change for the period 2023 - 2030, with a vision to 2050.

In particular, the province will focus on implementing 3 groups of tasks: Improving the effectiveness of climate change adaptation through strengthening state management of climate change and promoting the integration of climate change adaptation into the strategic and planning system; enhancing resilience and improving the adaptive capacity of communities, economic sectors and biodiversity through investing in adaptation actions, science and technology, raising awareness to be ready to adjust to climate change; prioritizing disaster risk reduction as well as minimizing damage, being ready to respond to natural disasters and extreme climates increasing due to climate change.

Converting crops to adapt to climate conditions not only brings economic efficiency but also helps people escape poverty.

Mr. Dang Son Hai - Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province said: In the coming time, with the function of state management in the field of hydrometeorology and climate change, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment will focus on advising the People's Committee of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province on adjusting planning and land use in urban areas, rural residential areas, especially those at risk of being affected by floods, landslides and rising sea levels.

At the same time, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue a plan to restore and expand the mangrove ecosystem by planting more mangrove forests; focusing on maximizing the potential advantages of each area to implement greenhouse gas emission reduction activities suitable to actual conditions; contributing to promoting economic growth, towards completing the province's sustainable poverty reduction goal.

In addition, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province will continue to strengthen coordination with relevant departments, branches and localities to organize investigations, assessments and delimitation of prohibited areas, restricting groundwater exploitation to combat the depletion of water resources; at the same time, resolutely ban sand mining in estuaries and coastal areas, especially in areas where landslides often occur. In particular, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment will continue to coordinate to strengthen propaganda, mobilization, and raise awareness among the community and businesses about the ability to adapt to climate change.
