Strengthening solidarity, unity and maintaining ASEAN's central role in the region

On the afternoon of November 14, local time (early morning of November 15, Hanoi time), on the occasion of attending the 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit Week in Lima (Peru), President Luong Cuong met with Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Hassanal Bolkiah. President Luong Cuong respectfully conveyed the greetings of General Secretary To Lam, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and Chairman of the National Assembly to the Sultan of Brunei.

The two leaders highly appreciated the effective development of the Vietnam-Brunei Comprehensive Partnership; agreed to closely coordinate to further deepen the bilateral relationship, bringing benefits to the people of both countries and contributing to the building of a prosperous and peaceful Vietnam. ASEAN Community strong, self-reliant and sustainable.

Discussing the future cooperation orientation, the two leaders agreed to continue promoting exchanges and contacts at high and all levels; maintain effective implementation of bilateral cooperation mechanisms; effectively implement the Action Program to implement the Vietnam-Brunei Comprehensive Partnership for the period 2023-2027; strengthen cooperation in all fields, especially the four priority fields agreed upon by the two countries' senior leaders: oil and gas, chemicals, Halal food processing, tourism and people-to-people exchange.

President Luong Cuong affirmed that Vietnam always creates favorable conditions for Bruneian enterprises to expand their investment and business; requested Brunei to support Vietnamese enterprises in production processes, granting certificates for agricultural products and Halal products; create conditions for Vietnam's Halal products to be exported to Brunei and participate in the global supply chain of Halal goods and food.

The Sultan of Brunei agreed with President Luong Cuong on the two sides strengthening cooperation in important areas such as maritime cooperation, including considering extending the Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in using the Hotline to support fishing activities and creating conditions for licensing Vietnamese fishing vessels and fishermen to fish in Brunei's waters.

The two leaders also agreed on strengthening solidarity, unity and maintaining the central role of the ASEAN in the region; promote cooperation on regional and international issues of mutual concern. Brunei affirmed its support for Vietnam to host the 2nd ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) in 2025 and the APEC Chairmanship in 2027.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sides emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, resolving disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS); continuing to closely coordinate to maintain solidarity, consensus and ASEAN's achievements in the East Sea issue.

The Sultan of Brunei said he is looking forward to his upcoming visit to Vietnam and respectfully invites President Luong Cuong to visit Brunei soon.
