New graduates receive salaries based on their abilities: What does the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs say?

In response to World Youth Skills Day (July 15), the General Department of Vocational Education, Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs has just issued a document requesting vocational training institutions and vocational skills assessment organizations to pay attention to a number of activities.

This includes coordinating with businesses to recognize, recruit, employ, and pay wages and salaries to students and graduates based on their skills and professional abilities.

Pay for graduates by job position

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Viet Huong - Deputy Director General of the General Department of Vocational Education (Ministry of Labor - Invalids and Social Affairs) - said that paying wages and salaries to graduates based on their skills and professional capacity has been included in the directions, directives, and priorities in the policies and directions of the Government as well as the directives of the Secretariat.

However, she analyzed that the right to pay salary belongs to the autonomy of the enterprise, but when there is orientation, communication, and increased awareness of the role of skills, the enterprise will have more appropriate policies.

"That is also the motivation for schools to attract students and supply highly skilled workers to the labor market," she said.

The government needs to have policies to encourage businesses to pay high wages.

According to Ms. Huong, the authorities are proposing that the Government have a policy to encourage businesses to pay graduates according to their position, job, and qualifications, as some large corporations are applying.

Through discussions with the Vietnam Federation of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), she learned that paying salaries based on job position and skill level of each person is noticed by businesses, considered a solution to retain talent.

Dr. Pham Xuan Khanh - Principal of Hanoi College of Technology - said the State should encourage businesses to pay better salaries to students and new graduates. For example, policies such as tax reduction should be piloted before being applied widely.

Mr. Khanh said the role of the school is very important right from when students are doing their internship.

“For example, students majoring in automobiles do internships on automobiles, students majoring in electricity do internships on electricity and are linked to the labor needs of businesses.

The school will find businesses with demand and in the right field for students to intern, participate in business activities such as design and production to bring benefits to the business," he said.
