According to the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, according to the plan, Hanoi will build urban railway line No. 2 to connect Noi Bai airport with the route: Nam Thang Long Urban Area - Tran Hung Dao - Thuong Dinh - Ring Road 2.5 - Buoi - Noi Bai - Soc Son.

According to the plan, the project is expected to start in the 2024-2025 period and be fully completed in 2034; the 2.4 Nam Thang Long - Noi Bai section is expected to be put into operation in 2030. This is one of the earliest planned urban railway routes in the capital, but due to many difficulties, the implementation has been delayed for many years.

The railway line connecting directly to Noi Bai airport is expected to facilitate passenger travel, contributing to improving traffic and promoting tourism in the future.

According to the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, Hanoi is focusing on implementing section 2.1 of urban railway line No. 2, but is still having to request adjustments to the investment policy.

According to the project feasibility study report approved by the Hanoi People's Committee in Decision No. 2054, this urban railway project No. 2 is expected to be about 11.5km long, with 2.6km of elevated section and 8.9km of underground section; the Depot area is 17.5ha wide, located in Xuan Dinh ward, Bac Tu Liem district.

The route starts from Nam Thang Long Urban Area, passes through routes such as Nguyen Van Huyen extension, Hoang Quoc Viet, Hoang Hoa Tham, Thuy Khue, Phan Dinh Phung, Hang Giay, Hang Duong, Hang Ngang, Hang Dao, Dinh Tien Hoang, Hang Bai, and ends at the intersection of Hue - Nguyen Du streets, with 10 stations (including 3 elevated stations and 7 underground stations).

Mr. Le Trung Hieu, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment, emphasized that the urban railway line No. 2 is one of the most important and urgent routes at present. Not only does it bring benefits to transportation and the environment, the line also plays an important role in the development of tourism and urban architecture in Hanoi.

Mr. Hieu also said that this project also connects to half of Hanoi's urban railway network under the expansion project of 15 routes. Therefore, investing in urban railway line No. 2 is the city's top priority.

In addition, Hanoi has also planned urban railway line No. 6 from Ngoc Hoi to Noi Bai with a total length of 43km, expected to be completed in 2035. This will be the main connecting route between Noi Bai International Airport and the second airport and the southern urban area of ​​Hanoi. The completion of lines No. 2 and No. 6 will ensure synchronous connection between Noi Bai Airport and the entire urban railway network of Hanoi.

Currently, Noi Bai International Airport is the second largest airport in the country in terms of passenger traffic, with nearly 30 million passengers in 2023. However, the means of transport connecting this large airport to the center of Hanoi and the Capital Region are still mainly private cars, taxis, passenger vans and only 2 bus routes. During holidays and Tet, the risk of congestion from the airport area is always present, causing inconvenience to both locals and international tourists.

Therefore, the construction of railways connecting Hanoi City with Noi Bai International Airport not only meets the need for convenient travel and reduces traffic congestion, but also plays an important role in improving the quality of transport infrastructure, creating more modern and fast travel options for passengers.
