Development of large timber forests

Expanding the area of ​​large timber forests to exploit the potential and advantages of forests and increase people's income is identified as one of the key solutions to promote sustainable agricultural and forestry development in the period of 2021-2025 according to the plan of the Provincial People's Committee. Accordingly, the agricultural sector and localities synchronously deploy solutions to complete the set target of large timber forests.

With nearly 190,000 hectares of forest and forestry land, accounting for over 50% of the natural land area, of which 123,000 hectares are planted forests, Phu Tho has great potential and advantages for developing large timber trees. Developing large timber forests will help proactively create raw materials for the local forest processing industry as well as serve exports. Compared to planting small timber forests, the profit from large timber forests is many times higher, depending on the age of exploitation and tree diameter. Applying the large timber forest planting model has many outstanding advantages over the old method, especially the economic efficiency it brings.

The plan for agricultural, forestry and fishery development in the province for the period 2021-2025 sets the target of implementing 2,200 hectares of large timber forests annually. By 2025, the area of ​​large timber forests in the province will reach 20,000 hectares, of which 10,000 hectares will be concentrated production areas associated with enterprises processing deep wood products for export. The productivity of planted forests will reach 17m3/ha/year, the output of exploited wood by 2025 will reach 810,000m3. The average growth rate of added value in the forestry sector is 3.3%/year, the income value from planted production forests will increase 1.5 times per unit area compared to 2021.

To achieve the set goals, the province has directed all levels, sectors and localities to implement many groups of solutions. With the goal of expanding the area, the Forestry sector and localities have effectively implemented the programs and policies to support sustainable forestry development of the Central and the province, in which special attention is paid to encouraging the planting and conversion of large timber forests; propagating and mobilizing people to proactively expand the area of ​​large timber trees. In addition, ensuring the productivity and quality of large timber forests; ensuring the quality of tree varieties, planting and care techniques are also strengthened by specialized sectors in coordination with local authorities to effectively organize and implement.

Currently, the expansion of planting areas and conversion of large timber forests is being promoted by localities in the province. Typically, in Yen Lap district, to encourage forest planting households to convert to the model of planting large timber trees, the district has issued documents guiding the management, protection and development of forests in the area. Comrade Phan Thanh Phuong - Head of the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said: In the 2020-2025 term, Yen Lap continues to identify the development of large timber trees as a key task, concretized by Resolution 42-NQ/HU, dated April 12, 2021 of the District Party Committee on developing the forest hill economy, focusing on large timber trees, medicinal plants and fruit trees. In particular, the district has focused on disseminating to households the economic benefits and protection of the natural environment from planting large timber forests, the province's policy on support mechanisms for planting large timber forests in the area... Thanks to that, up to now, the whole district has planted and converted over 1,300 hectares of large timber forests, reaching 110.5% of the Resolution's target.

In Tan Son district, the planting and conversion of large timber forests is focused on implementation. In 2024, the district will complete 900 hectares of large timber forests in communes and towns, bringing the total area of ​​large timber forests in the district to 4,600 hectares. With the participation of the province, specialized sectors, and localities, the goal of developing large timber forests has achieved many important results. Currently, the area of ​​large timber development in the province is 18,900 hectares, reaching 94.5% of the target by 2025 (intensive large timber afforestation: 15,300 hectares, converting large timber plantations for business: 3,600 hectares). The planted forests grow and develop well.

To promote advantages and expand large timber material areas, the province continues to implement current support mechanisms. According to comrade Truong Quang Dang - Head of Forest Development Department, Forest Protection Department, the Forest Protection sector advises and strengthens guidance and support for granting sustainable forest certification for large timber forest areas that meet the area requirements to increase the economic value of forestry as well as encourage forest owners, forest planting households, cooperatives, and forestry cooperatives to promote the expansion of large timber forest models. Coordinate with local authorities to transfer and provide technical training for people to properly implement the process and techniques of intensive planting of large timber forests, while focusing on forest protection, fire prevention and fighting, and recommending people to use seedlings of clear origin and quality to improve productivity and quality of planted forests...
