A sun bear has just been discovered in Chu Mom Ray National Park through a camera trap.

On August 12, Mr. Dao Xuan Thuy, Director of Chu Mom Ray National Park ( Quang Ngai province) said that through camera trap technology (automatic cameras installed in the forest), the unit recorded the appearance of two rare animal species: the Asian black bear and the flying crab.

These are two species belonging to group IIB, listed as endangered, rare and prioritized for protection and discovered for the first time in the national park. The location of discovery is in the forest area of Ya Mo Forestry Enterprise (in the park).

According to Mr. Thuy, Chu Mom Ray National Park manages more than 60,600 hectares of forest, and has installed 280 automatic cameras in the forest to monitor biodiversity, record images of animal species, and serve the conservation of rare genetic resources.

In recent times, camera trap technology has helped capture images of many rare animals. In addition to the two species of bears and flying crabs mentioned above, the park has also discovered many endangered species such as gaurs, red-crowned fowl, green peacocks, and brown-shanked douc langurs.

“The continuous discovery of rare animal species shows that forest protection work in Chu Mom Ray National Park is effective, and the habitats of the species are well protected and developed. In the coming time, the unit will continue to strengthen strict management and protection measures to preserve and develop the gene sources of rare animal species, contributing to sustainable biodiversity conservation,” said Mr. Thuy.

According to Mr. Thuy, currently, the fauna of Chu Mom Ray National Park has recorded 1,003 species, including 112 endangered, precious and rare species.
