Developing sustainable health systems

As a city with an important strategic position on the socio-economic map of Vietnam, Da Nang not only focuses on developing transport and industrial infrastructure but also pays special attention to the health sector to improve the quality of life for the people.

Over the past time, the city has actively invested in and upgraded its healthcare infrastructure. This is one of the important steps to improve the quality of healthcare for the people, meeting the increasing demand for healthcare services in the area.

At the end of 2024, Da Nang officially put into operation two large medical centers with a total investment of nearly 1,000 billion VND. Of which, the Center for Neurosurgery, Trauma and Plastic Burns has a scale of 11 floors above ground, 2 basements, with 407 beds, playing an important role in the treatment of complex neurological and orthopedic diseases.

At the same time, the Organ and Stem Cell Transplantation Center of Da Nang Hospital also came into operation. With 422 beds and advanced equipment, this is one of the first medical centers in the region specializing in organ transplantation and stem cell treatment.

The operation of the two medical centers at Da Nang Hospital demonstrates the city's concern for the health sector as well as creating conditions for people in the city and the Central and Central Highlands provinces to enjoy advanced, high-tech medical services without having to travel far for treatment to either end of the country.

In parallel, Da Nang has also implemented projects to build specialized hospitals to meet the needs of treating specific diseases. Typically, the Da Nang Maternity and Pediatrics Hospital was upgraded with an investment of nearly 789 billion VND. The goal of the project is not only to improve facilities but also to enhance professional capacity, helping the hospital become a leading medical unit in the field of maternal and child health care.

In addition, the city also implemented a project to upgrade Da Nang Mental Hospital, with a budget of more than 87 billion VND, to improve treatment and care conditions for patients.

Along with developing end-line hospitals, Da Nang also focuses on building and upgrading the system of medical stations in wards and communes, and emergency services and patient transportation.

As of 2024, the city will have 1,076 licensed medical facilities, including 96 public facilities, 1 infirmary, 56 ward and commune health stations, 7 emergency and patient transport services, and 980 private medical facilities.

The expansion and upgrading of the health care system has contributed to increasing the number of hospital beds, solving the overload situation and improving the quality of services. The hospital bed ratio currently reaches 74 beds per 10,000 people, twice as high as the national average.

Notably, from a city with 61.4 hospital beds in 2014, Da Nang has increased to more than 74 hospital beds by the end of 2024, surpassing the national average (nationally 34 hospital beds/10,000 people). This index shows significant investment in medical infrastructure, improving the capacity to receive and treat patients.

Towards a modern healthcare system on par with the region

In addition to infrastructure investment, the city’s health sector has also made a strong mark in applying modern medical techniques in hospitals. The city’s health system receives more than 4 million patients for medical examination and treatment each year, of which more than 35% are from other provinces.

In particular, many specialized techniques have been successfully implemented such as: in vitro fertilization, early skin-to-skin neonatal essential care... (Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital); lobectomy, embryoectomy, mediastinal tumor resection, pancreaticoduodenectomy, liver resection... (Da Nang Oncology Hospital); testing therapy and psychological therapy in the treatment of children (Psychiatric Hospital); stem cell transplantation for spinal cord injury treatment; kidney transplantation; solitaire technique (thrombectomy) in the treatment of acute cerebral infarction; application of ECMO technique, ultrafiltration hemodialysis technique (Da Nang Hospital)...

Currently, the city's health sector is promoting the application of technology and digital transformation to improve the quality of medical examination and treatment, bringing satisfaction, efficiency and convenience to people, thereby contributing to the implementation of the Project "Developing smart healthcare in Da Nang city".

One of the important steps in the digital transformation of the city's health sector is the application of the electronic medical record system in hospitals, health stations and medical examination and treatment facilities. This system helps to store, manage and share information about the health status of patients quickly and accurately. Patients do not need to bring paper records when coming for medical examination and treatment, saving time and minimizing the risk of information loss.

In addition to applying electronic medical records, Da Nang also deploys telemedicine services, allowing patients to consult and receive medical examination and treatment via the internet. Especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, these services help reduce the burden on hospitals.

Following the direction of Resolution 43-NQ/TW, in the future, Da Nang will continue to develop the healthcare sector in a modern and smart direction, applying advanced technologies to improve service quality as well as integrating technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data and Internet of Things (IoT) in disease diagnosis, health monitoring of people and hospital management.

At the same time, the city will focus on training human resources, developing a network of high-quality medical services, continuing to invest in building new and upgrading hospitals, especially satellite hospitals, to reduce the load on end-line hospitals, thereby improving the quality of medical examination and treatment, serving the increasing needs of the people.

With methodical and strategic steps, Da Nang is ready to become a major medical center of the Central Highlands region as well as aiming to build a healthy community where all people receive comprehensive and quality health care.
