Giving positive comments to 2pillz and other Gen Z artists in Vietnam, Pitchfork also commented: "Vietnamese pop music is experiencing a renaissance."

Pitchfork is an online magazine that claims to be "the most trusted voice in the music industry". The 7.1 score of the album PILLZCASSO is on par with international albums such as Lover by Taylor Swift and RUBY by Jennie. This is a positive rating, although not outstanding.

Vietnamese music revival thanks to Gen Z

According to the famous "picky" American music magazine, besides Wren Evans, My Anh, NAN... the most prominent Gen Z singer in Vietnam today is tlinh, "Vietnam's Ariana Grande" with charming, smooth songs. Her best songs are produced by Pham Phu Nguyen, aka 2pillz.

2pillz's debut studio album PILLZCASSO is a collection of light and confident dance pop featuring a wide range of Vietnamese artists. The album is a musical feast that fits the beach vibe and has some quiet moments.

"Although comfortable and light, this is V-pop's strongest statement this year" - Pitchfork commented.

Since 2pillz is also a DJ, the PILLZCASSO album was designed as a DJ set that can be played seamlessly. On YouTube, the album was also released seamlessly by 2pillz, instead of being divided into individual tracks.

Pitchfork writes: "The image is important: he's standing at a DJ console with multiple instruments, like Calvin Harris on Funk Wav Bounces . But PILLZCASSO has more melodic unity than the Scottish producer's albums."

2pillz coined the term "shake well" for his music, referring to smooth, energetic dance music, "rocking" music that is still poetic and gentle.

Pitchfork praised 2pillz for choosing Vietnamese vocalists very effectively for their music.

One of the best songs on the album is "Kiem chu doi tay di nao" sung skillfully and seductively by Vu Phung Tien. An EDM section emerges before a powerful drop, followed by a pounding garage rhythm, evoking the thrill and excitement of a heatstroke.

In the song " Step away/Lie back?" , he combines reggae bassline and skanking guitar, Van Mai Huong's whispering vocals. The song " Nobody but you" has smooth instrumental layers, sensuality influenced by UK bass, future garage, EDM and vinahouse.

The magazine named vinahouse, a Vietnamese house music style, in this album. In Once You Say Love, Everything's Over (featuring Wokeup, Vu Phung Tien), vinahouse has a melancholy tone.

In Falling Yellow Autumn Leaves Bring Love, 2pillz sampled Phuong Dung, a famous bolero singer. The song sounds cheerful, sincere and intense.

Until now... - 2pillz x tlinh

2pillz's album transfers generations of V-pop

Above all, PILLZCASSO 's overall emotional combination of vinahouse melodies mixed with the sentiments of Vietnamese ballads has created the album's distinctive flavor.

Up to this point... performed by tlinh, still in the pop wave influenced by afrobeats but the voice makes the difference. But tlinh's voice brings a distinct emotion.

Vietnamese Gen Z singers are not too concerned with the clear pronunciation of the previous generation, but rather tend to sing naturally. This separates them from previous generations.

Young Vietnamese artists are finding ways to express themselves, and "Currently, no V-pop album represents the generational transition better and more confidently than PILLZCASSO ," according to Pitchfork.

In addition to music, PILLZCASSO is also very diverse in sound. There are t'rung and lithophone sounds in Thac nung , oriental melodies, synth flutes... This helps to elevate Vietnamese musical instruments.
