Clip: Xuan Hoang The time from mid-March is the herring fishing season for fishermen along the coast of Nghe An. When the sun just rises above the sea, it is also the time when the rafts of fishermen from Dien Kim, Dien Hai, Dien Thanh... communes of Dien Chau district return to shore after a night of fishing. Herring lives in surface water, often in schools, and when they see the school moving, fishermen start to cast the net. Photo: Xuan Hoang
The herring season starts at the end of February and lasts until the end of May. Mr. Bui Van Luong, a fisherman in Dien Kim commune, said that herring swim in schools, 2-5 nautical miles from shore. We usually go from 2am and start to go ashore to remove the fish at around 7am. Almost every trip to the sea catches 150-200kg, selling for 13,000 VND/kg, earning millions. Since the beginning of the season, Mr. Luong's family has earned nearly 50 million VND. The herrings are picked and cleaned by traders, and purchased on the spot. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuong, a trader, said that the herrings are caught at night and not kept on ice, so they are still fresh. Fresh herrings are not only sold in nearby markets but are also packed and transported to Hanoi and some northern cities for consumption.
