(CLO) The head of the United Nations refugee agency called for patience as millions of Syrian refugees consider returning home after the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

In a statement to the media on December 9, the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi said: "This is a remarkable opportunity for Syria to move towards peace and for its people to begin returning home."

“But with the current situation still uncertain, millions of Syrian refugees are carefully assessing whether it is safe to return home. Some are eager, while others are hesitant,” he added.

He urged Syrian refugees displaced by the 13-year civil war to be "patient and vigilant" as they consider their options.

As of December 9, European countries have temporarily stopped accepting asylum applications from Syrians until further notice.

Mr Grandi said the possibility of repatriation could depend on whether Syria's new leaders prioritize law and order.

“A transition that respects the rights, lives and aspirations of all Syrians – regardless of ethnicity, religion or political beliefs – is essential for people to feel safe,” he said, adding that UNHCR was ready to help countries organise voluntary repatriations.
