Last week, in New York (USA), Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang led a delegation of key officials from the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations to visit and work with the United Nations Archives to learn and research valuable documents about the history of the United Nations as well as the process of Vietnam's accession and participation.

This is an event in a series of activities to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day and the 48th anniversary of Vietnam-United Nations relations.

At the meeting, experts on history and documents of the United Nations introduced the history of the formation and development of the United Nations and important milestones in the Vietnam-United Nations relationship, including before Vietnam officially joined the organization in 1977.

The highlight of the exhibition space is the original documents including many official letters and notes of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, along with reports and resolutions of the United Nations related to Vietnam's national liberation struggle, with the support of many international friends in the two resistance wars against colonialism and imperialism, the 1954 Geneva Agreement, the 1973 Paris Agreement and the process of Vietnam joining the United Nations.

Prominent among the documents are the exchanges between President Ho Chi Minh and the representative of the United Nations in Vietnam in 1945, from the early days of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, which was also the time when the United Nations was officially established; the diplomatic note requesting admission to the United Nations signed by Prime Minister Pham Van Dong on August 10, 1976, declaring that Vietnam accepted all obligations as prescribed by the Charter; Resolution 413 dated July 20, 1977 of the Security Council recommending the United Nations General Assembly to admit Vietnam; Resolution A/RES/32/2 dated September 20, 1977 of the United Nations General Assembly officially admitting Vietnam as the 149th member of the United Nations...

On this occasion, UN experts also introduced many documents and materials related to Vietnam's efforts to escape the embargo and actively integrate into the international community, including the United Nations' role as an intermediary, promoting dialogue and reconciliation.

Talking with leaders and experts of the United Nations Archives Department, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang said that the new and valuable documents introduced by experts not only have historical value but also vividly reflect Vietnam's great efforts to overcome difficulties and challenges, becoming an equal and responsible member of the international community.

Over the past 48 years, the cooperative relationship with the United Nations has contributed to protecting and promoting Vietnam's national interests, especially maintaining and consolidating a peaceful, secure and favorable environment for development, promoting deep international integration and contributing to enhancing Vietnam's position and image in the international arena, while deepening relations with other member states of the United Nations.
