Spread the spirit of compassion
National history has proven that Buddhism is not only a religion but also an inseparable part of the cultural and spiritual life of the nation. The values of compassion and altruism of Buddhism blend with the tradition of patriotism, humanity and solidarity, creating a sustainable cultural identity, helping the nation to firmly overcome many historical ups and downs. The melodies of Buddhist music will help people connect more deeply with themselves and with all the noble values in life that Buddhism guides people towards.
Recently, the Award Ceremony of the “Buddhist Art Creation Campaign” towards the United Nations Day of Vesak 2025 took place at the Ho Guom Theater (Hanoi). The “Buddhist Art Creation Campaign launched in 2024” received enthusiastic responses from many authors across the country. The participating works not only demonstrate creative talent but also convey profound messages of compassion, wisdom and enlightenment. All blend together, spreading the light of Buddhism to today's life.
Vice President and Deputy Secretary General of the 2025 United Nations Vesak Organizing Committee - Thich Tho Lac, Head of the Central Cultural Committee of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, said that more than 200 songs were sent, demonstrating the richness of musical styles, creativity in content, and spreading profound spiritual values.
Praise the grace
With the trend of balancing religion and life, in recent years, many musicians and artists have performed emotional Buddhist music products. The musical works convey beautiful messages about Buddhism such as filial piety, living a good life, living a useful life for the community with familiar and natural lyrics, so they gradually enter life and become "spiritual food" sought after by many audiences. Not only performing art shows, artists also participate in activities to perform rituals, praying for national peace and prosperity. Artists often dedicate themselves to singing at pagodas. They bring their songs and voices to serve Buddhists to praise the merits of their parents, those who have contributed to the country.
Associate Professor Dr. Cu Le Duyen (Vietnam National Academy of Music), who has meaningful Buddhist music works, shared that Buddhist music is different from other music genres. Without an understanding of Buddhist teachings, it will be difficult to express them fully and in the right spirit. Buddhist music is not about lofty doctrines, but about very ordinary thoughts such as filial piety to parents, humane acts, love between people... Those thoughts are conveyed in the melody and lyrics in a simple, rustic way for listeners to easily feel. The closeness and philosophy of Buddhist music is therefore gradually entering life, chosen by many artists.
Artist Quang Long - Xam Ha Thanh Group shared: "The works all emphasize the message of the four great graces: grace to the country, grace to the Three Jewels, grace to parents, grace to all living beings. For Vietnamese people, filial piety always comes first."
“Since learning and singing Buddhist music, the lyrics that teach how to treat others have helped me think differently and live differently. I find myself becoming more gentle, many things that used to make me angry and irritable, but now I can calmly look at them. I have a more harmonious way to handle things, my temper is less angry, I feel more forgiving. Those are also the things that I find good when singing Buddhist music. I want to spread this to the audience, especially young people” - artist Quoc Quoc confided.
