Bernd Zehner is a German content creator who is currently traveling in Hanoi to experience local dishes.

“I am in the capital of Vietnam and will enjoy the famous dishes here, including pho. Hanoi pho is great, prepared in many versions with different prices. That is what I want to explore.

I am going to start my journey to find the best pho in Hanoi and wonder if the higher price means better taste?”, Bernd wrote on his personal YouTube channel with more than 200 thousand followers.

Bernd enjoys chicken pho at a famous restaurant in Hoan Kiem district. This is also a familiar dining address for domestic and foreign tourists when visiting Hanoi.

The German tourist said he found two pho restaurants in Hanoi, one serving chicken pho which was considered the best and cheapest in the city. The other served the most expensive beef pho he knew of.

“I was eager to know which pho had the best taste. Was the expensive beef pho worth the experience or was the cheap chicken pho a better choice,” Bernd said.

The first place he visited was a chicken pho restaurant in Hoan Kiem district. The restaurant has been open for 15 years and was listed by Michelin Guide as a Bib Gourmand in Hanoi in 2023.

50,000 VND chicken pho with soft and juicy thigh meat, plus lots of blanched green onions, experienced by German YouTuber

At the restaurant, Bernd ordered a regular chicken pho, priced at 1.8 Euros (equivalent to 50,000 VND). He said that before eating, the first thing to do is to taste the broth. This helps diners feel the flavor of the dish more clearly and can add spices according to their preferences.

“The broth is clear and has a slightly sweet taste. The side dishes are also beautifully presented,” he shared his feelings.

Bernd then adds a squeeze of lime, garlic vinegar and chili sauce to the pho. “Just a little fresh chili changes the flavor,” he says.

Western guests were amazed by the flavor of the broth of the sidewalk chicken pho.

The Western guest also said that the pho noodles when eaten with hot broth are not soft and still ensure quality. The pho noodles are well-infused with flavor, delicious and fragrant. The chicken thighs are soft, the skin is crispy and strangely chewy.

“I love the herbs and spices in the chicken pho here. The pho, the meat and the broth are all delicious. The pho is delicious, even the budget version that costs less than 2 Euros is loved by many diners,” the German YouTuber commented.

The next place Bernd explored was a restaurant located in Ba Dinh district, specializing in serving pho dishes that combine traditional and modern flavors.

Here, the German guest ordered a special wagyu beef stone bowl pho for 36.37 Euros (about 1 million VND). According to his observation, the ingredients were kept separately and beautifully arranged. The hot broth was served in a large stone bowl.

Pho is served with 4 different types of beef, sliced into thin, bite-sized pieces.

Bernd could not hide his excitement, immediately dipped the beef slices into the hot broth, waited a moment for the meat to be rare, then enjoyed it. The guest was surprised because the beef was fresh, fatty, and delicious just by eating it.

“The beef is so tender that it melts in your mouth. This part of the meat has both fat and crispy skin, it's quite delicious. I really like it,” Bernd said.

After adding beef, rice noodles and vegetables to the stone bowl, he added lime juice and fresh chili to make the dish more flavorful.

Western guests tasted the beef and praised it as soft and delicious.

The German YouTuber highly appreciates the flavor of the pho broth, which has a natural sweetness mixed with a bit of richness, with the aroma of simmered bones and many herbs. The pho noodles are thin but chewy, and do not break when dipped in the hot broth.

At the end of the meal, Bernd commented that the stone bowl beef pho was quite delicious and was satisfied with the taste. However, he said that there was no need to spend too much money to enjoy this "national" dish because just eating pho on the sidewalk was delicious and attractive enough.

“I recommend that if you want to enjoy Hanoi pho, you should go to the sidewalk restaurants because the pho there is delicious and the price is reasonable. Or you can go to the chicken pho restaurant that I experienced. I think this chicken pho is more worth enjoying than the beef pho I ate today. Beef pho is delicious but expensive,” said the German guest.
