No longer used for entertainment purposes, deepfakes are gradually being exploited by cybercriminals to become a fraud tool... and deepfake fraud will increase with more diverse and sophisticated forms.

Kaspersky predicts that deepfake scams will increase in more diverse and sophisticated forms.

After researching darknet forums, where cybercriminals often operate, Kaspersky determined that there are many criminals using deepfakes for fraud, to the point that demand far exceeds the supply of deepfake software currently on the market.

Kaspersky experts predict that deepfake scams will increase in variety and sophistication, from offering a high-quality impersonation video with full production services to using celebrity images in fake social media livestreams and promising to double the amount the victim sent them.

“Deepfake has become a nightmare for women and society. Cybercrime are now exploiting artificial intelligence (AI) to superimpose victims’ faces onto pornographic photos and videos as well as in propaganda campaigns. These forms aim to manipulate public opinion by spreading false information or even damaging the reputation of organizations or individuals. We call on the public to be more vigilant against this threat,” said Ms. Vo Duong Tu Diem, Country Director of Kaspersky Vietnam.
