Premarital health check-up should be given due attention.

Pre-marital health check-ups not only help couples understand their health status and prevent the risk of genetic diseases, but are also a practical solution to improve population quality. However, in reality, this is still not given due attention by many young people.

According to Ms. Tieu Thi Van Hanh, Deputy Director of Thai Nguyen Department of Health, pre-marital health consultation and examination is considered a primary preventive step in improving population quality. This is the “golden key” that opens the door to sustainable happiness for each family, while contributing to creating a healthy human resource for society.

Statistics show that the rate of young men and women going for premarital health check-ups in Thai Nguyen has increased over the years. While in 2021 it only reached 12.7%, in the first 6 months of 2025 it reached 22.5% of the plan. This result partly shows the effectiveness of propaganda and mobilization work, as well as the positive change in young people's awareness of premarital health check-ups.

However, premarital health check-ups have not yet become a common practice. One of the reasons is legal factors. Currently, the 2014 Law on Marriage and Family or related decrees do not stipulate mandatory premarital health check-ups.

In addition, a number of young people still take premarital health check-ups lightly due to fear of being misunderstood. Especially in cases where two people do not share the same views, the person who suggests the check-up will easily be considered untrustworthy.

In urban areas, premarital health check-ups are not easy, in mountainous areas, remote areas, the difficulties are even greater. There is a lack of facilities, inadequate equipment, and a shortage of specialized doctors, which limits the implementation. In addition, difficult travel conditions, especially during the rainy season, along with a tight economy also reduce people's access to medical services.

However, the Thai Nguyen Health sector has made many efforts to resolve the issue: from organizing regular communication, promoting education in schools and the community, to implementing free premarital health check-ups at many medical facilities.

To complete the target for 2025 and the following years, Ms. Tieu Thi Van Hanh and representatives of a number of medical facilities in the area emphasized the need to mobilize the strength of the entire political system, departments, branches, organizations and the whole society according to a synchronous roadmap.

The primary focus is to raise sustainable awareness through multi-channel communication, appropriate for each region, combining newspapers, social networks, with direct counseling at schools and communities. Integrating knowledge about premarital health examination into the sex education program to form in schools, helping students have basic knowledge and correct awareness of this issue from a young age.

At the same time, service provision capacity also needs to continue to be strengthened, such as: Investing in facilities, training human resources, standardizing pre-marital examination packages at the grassroots level, expanding time frames and making online appointments, ensuring privacy for people to access conveniently.
