According to Reuters news agency, Iranian police announced the arrest of three suspects accused of plotting terrorist attacks during the week ending Ramadan.
One of the three suspects is Mohammad Zaker, alias Ramesh, a senior member of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS). Two other suspects were arrested in the Karaj area, west of the capital Tehran. Security forces had previously opened fire at the scene. Eight other suspects who were present at the same location as the IS members were also arrested during the operation.
IS claimed responsibility for two bombings in Kerma, southeastern Iran, earlier this year that killed nearly 100 people and injured many more. The group targeted the fourth anniversary of the death of General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Earlier, in 2022, IS claimed responsibility for an attack on a Shiite shrine in Iran that killed 15 people. IS also claimed responsibility for the 2017 twin bombings of the Iranian parliament and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder, Ruhollah Khomeini.
