Vietnamese students win big prizes at WMI international math competition

All 36/36 Vietnamese primary, secondary and high school students participating in the final round of the World Mathematics Invitational (WMI) from July 25 to 29 in Bangkok, Thailand won high prizes.

The delegation won 2 diamond medals, 9 gold medals, 7 silver medals, 13 bronze medals and 5 consolation prizes. Among them, contestant Tran Lam Dao, a 6th grade student at Nguyen Truong To Secondary School (Hanoi) won the Champion award (top 1 in the world in grade 6), Legend Award (3 consecutive years of winning gold medals or diamond medals), The Star of The World cup (world star) for the contestant with the highest score among the contestants of the Vietnamese delegation and won the diamond medal this year.

Student Vu Gia Khanh, grade 11, Vinschool the Harmony High School, won a gold medal and achieved the second highest score in grade 11.

Participating in this year's WMI exam, there were 807 candidates from 23 countries and territories, including many very strong teams from countries with developed mathematics such as China, Hong Kong, Bulgaria...

Student Vu Gia Khanh, grade 11, Vinschool the Harmony High School, won a Gold Medal and had the second highest score in grade 11.

With 2 parts of multiple choice and essay, candidates compete to win prizes such as diamond medals (top 3% of students with the highest scores in each grade), gold medals (top 15% of students with the highest scores), silver medals, bronze medals and consolation prizes.

Before the final round, member countries hold preliminary rounds to select the best candidates to compete.

The final round exam of the WMI 2025 exam is assessed to have a tight structure, rich in creativity, clear classification and close connection with real life. The exam questions from primary to high school level, each block has a separate exam, not only testing basic mathematical knowledge but also focusing on training logical thinking, problem solving ability, and application to practical situations.

In particular, many questions incorporate facts related to the year 2025, creating topicality, stimulating curiosity and connecting candidates to reality. The exams at the primary level are vividly constructed, close to life situations such as calculating school hours, dividing cakes, folding paper, shopping, calendars, etc. The exams at the secondary and high school levels demonstrate mathematical depth through problems on spatial geometry, probability combinations, logical reasoning, advanced arithmetic and optimization.

The richness of content, diversity of forms and openness in problem posing have helped the WMI 2025 international math exam not only be a test of mathematical ability but also an opportunity for global students to practice their thinking, creativity and ability to apply mathematics to the real world with the spirit of "Mathematics connects the world".
