Truong Bao Ngoc and Nguyen Huu Tien Hung are two students from Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted. At the Abu Reikhan Beruniy International Chemistry Olympiad, both of them won the Gold and Silver Medals, helping the Vietnamese team win big at this tournament.

Truong Bao Ngoc, a former student of Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, has been interested in chemistry since 8th grade.

Over the past 5 years, Bao Ngoc has "pocketed" many remarkable achievements such as: Third prize in the province in the 2019-2020 school year, Encouragement prize for excellent national students in the 2021-2022 school year, Gold medal in the Natural Science Olympiad in the 2022-2023 school year, First prize for excellent national students in the 2022-2023 school year.

As for Nguyen Huu Tien Hung, although he is only in grade 11, he has many achievements such as: Gold medal in the exchange competition between coastal plain schools in the 2022-2023 school year, Second prize in the national excellent student in chemistry in the 2022-2023 school year. Most recently, Tien Hung won a Gold medal at the Abu Reikhan Beruniy International Chemistry Olympiad, held in Uzbekistan.

Sharing with Dan Tri reporter , Bao Ngoc said: "When participating in this contest, we will have to pay for everything ourselves, so I hesitated. However, after that, the People's Committee of Bac Ninh province supported us with that cost, so I decided to participate in this contest.

We always express our gratitude for the timely encouragement of the leadership of Bac Ninh province."

As the youngest member of the team, Tien Hung confided that he did not encounter too many difficulties because he was always supported by his seniors in the team: "Because I studied one year less than my seniors in grade 12, I used that as motivation to try harder and catch up with my seniors' progress."

In theory, both students have mastered the knowledge, they just need to spend some time reviewing. However, for practice, the two students need to practice a lot.

"The coaches spent many sessions with our team to practice experiments, especially the inorganic and organic parts. Thanks to the teachers' dedicated guidance, I completed the test very well," Bao Ngoc shared.

Tien Hung also agreed that the part he was most worried about was practice. The male student said: "The practice part accounts for 30 points. However, I haven't had much chance to practice. The rest of the team also have the same difficulty as me.

During a month of review, the teachers gave the team more practice sessions and watched videos online so we could solidify this knowledge."

Because it was the first time the Vietnamese team participated in the competition, both students did not expect much from the results. Bao Ngoc shared that as long as the team won a medal, she would be very happy.

However, the result was worthy of the two students' relentless efforts over a month. Bao Ngoc brought home a silver medal and Tien Hung brought home a gold medal.

"Before the competition, I was always nervous because I would soon compete with teams from other countries. Keeping myself in the most comfortable mood, I completed my test and brought home the Gold Medal.

In addition to the highest medal at the tournament, I also have many memorable memories of the country and people of Uzbekistan. It was my first time abroad, I was confused but I was warmly welcomed by the organizers and volunteers," Tien Hung said.

Bao Ngoc confided: "When I took the test, I felt like I didn't do well. The result of getting a silver medal was beyond my expectations."

After finishing the exam, Tien Hung plans to continue studying for the opportunity to participate in the IChO (International Chemistry Olympiad) next year. The male student also plans to study medicine in the US or Singapore.

As for Bao Ngoc, she wishes to study chemistry at the University of Natural Sciences (Vietnam National University, Hanoi). She will continue to study in Vietnam for 1-2 years and prepare her application well to study abroad.

The Abu Reikhan Beruniy International Chemistry Olympiad for students under 18 years of age is organized by the Ministry of Preschool and General Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the Khorezm region of the Republic of Uzbekistan every two years from 2023.

The exam is organized in two rounds. In round one, students take a theory test consisting of 7 lessons within 5 hours, with a maximum score of 70 points. In round two, students take a practical test within 3 hours, with a maximum score of 30 points.

This year, the Abu Reikhan Beruniy International Chemistry Olympiad was held from June 11-17 with the participation of 15 countries. With 4 gold medals and 4 silver medals, the Vietnamese delegation ranked first over strong teams such as Russia, Uzbekistan, Brazil, India, Türkiye, etc.
