TPO – On the afternoon of October 20 at the Presidential Palace, General Secretary and President To Lam presented the decision to promote him to the rank of General. Chief of the General Staff Nguyen Tan Cuong is the 17th General of the Vietnam People's Army.

General Nguyen Tan Cuong was born in 1966; hometown: Tien Ngoai commune, Duy Tien town, Ha Nam province. Political theory level: Senior. Professional level: Bachelor of Military. He is a member of the Party Central Committee of the 11th (alternate), 12th and 13th terms; member of the Central Military Commission; and a delegate of the 15th National Assembly.

From October 1983 to June 1986, he was a student of Company 3, Battalion 3 of Army Officer School 2 and was admitted to the Party during this time.

From July 1986 to September 1987, he held the rank of Lieutenant, serving as Platoon Leader, Battalion 9, Regiment 201, Division 302, Front 479, Military Region 7 (fighting in Cambodia).

From October 1987 to March 1992, he was a Tactical Instructor trainee at the 2nd Army Officer School; then held the positions of Deputy Company Commander, Company Commander, and Training Assistant at the 209th Regiment, 312th Division, 1st Corps (now 12th Corps). He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lieutenant and Captain during this time.

From April 1992 to August 2000, he held the following positions: Battalion Commander of Battalion 8, Regiment 209, Division 312, Corps 1; Assistant to the Military Training Department, General Staff, Corps 1; and a trainee in Command and Staff training for combined arms at the Regimental level at the Army Academy. During this period, he was promoted to the ranks of Major and Lieutenant Colonel.

From September 2000 to November 2004, at Division 312 (Army Corps 1), he held the following positions: Deputy Regiment Commander and Chief of Staff of Regiment 141; Regiment Commander of Regiment 141, Deputy Secretary of the Regiment Party Committee; Regiment Commander of Regiment 165, Deputy Secretary of the Regiment Party Committee. During this time, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

From December 2004 to May 2010, he was Deputy Chief of Staff of Division 312, Corps 1; a student of Command and Staff Training for Combined Arms at the Division level at the Army Academy (September 2005 - July 2006); Deputy Division Commander for military affairs and Division Commander of Division 312, Corps 1, Deputy Secretary of the Division Party Committee. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel during this period.

From June 2010 to March 2013, he held the following positions: Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of the 1st Corps; a trainee in Command and Staff training for combined arms at the campaign and strategic level at the National Defense Academy; Commander of the 1st Corps, Deputy Secretary of the Corps Party Committee; a trainee in training for senior reserve officers at the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics. During this time, he was promoted to the rank of Major General.

From April 2013 to September 2018, he held the positions of Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of Military Region 4; Commander of Military Region 4, Member of the Central Military Commission, Deputy Secretary of the Military Region Party Committee and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.

From October 2018 to January 2021, he held the positions of Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army; Deputy Minister of National Defense and was promoted to the rank of Senior Lieutenant General.

On June 3, 2021, the President presented the decision to appoint Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Tan Cuong to the position of Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army.

On October 20, 2024, General Secretary and President To Lam presented the decision to promote the rank of General to Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army Nguyen Tan Cuong.
