Head of the An Giang Province Elderly Association Le Thanh Tan said that over the years, the “Old age - bright example” movement has affirmed the important role of local elderly people. Their work is not only a shining example for many people, their children and grandchildren to follow, but also makes important contributions to the community and society, together building and sustainably developing their homeland.

Through the movement, many outstanding collectives and individuals have emerged in various fields. Notably, the elderly in the movement "All people protect national security", participating in building the grassroots political system, doing good business and production; the movement to help, support, and care for people in difficult circumstances, actively building new rural areas and civilized urban areas... The above activities have been awarded certificates of merit by the Central Committee of the Vietnam Association of the Elderly, the Ministry of Public Security, the Provincial People's Committee, and competent agencies...

An Giang province has 272,372 elderly people, 216,460 members, operating in 1,049 branches and 3,657 groups. Of which, over 7,500 people participate in social work, making practical contributions to the process of socio-economic development, building new rural areas, ensuring security and order, national border sovereignty... From 2021 to present, the elderly associations at all levels have organized many practical activities to care for the material and spiritual life of members. Specifically, more than 20,000 elderly people were congratulated on their longevity (1,146 people turned 90 years old and 85 people turned 100 years old).

In addition, regular health check-ups, health insurance medicine, and free eye surgery support have been widely implemented, helping thousands of elderly people improve their health and quality of life. In addition, nearly 1,680 members of the elderly association at all levels in 35 clubs and associations participate in helping, supporting, and caring for the elderly, their families, and people in difficult circumstances.

Joining the position of Chairman of the Elderly Association of An Phu Commune (Tinh Bien Town) at the age of nearly 70, Mr. Nguyen Van Nham has been a typical example of helping, supporting, and caring for the elderly for many years. With outstanding achievements in the emulation movement "Old age - bright example" in the period of 2021 - 2025, he was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Provincial People's Committee. In the past time, he has consolidated 4 branches, with nearly 980 elderly people, bringing the association's activities into order.

In addition to doing a good job of caring for and protecting the rights of the elderly, he mobilized philanthropists to build new houses for 59 elderly people (50 million VND/house); mobilized 8,390 gifts (400,000 VND/gift) to support 8,390 elderly people. Notably, 2 elderly people voluntarily donated the monthly state subsidy (totaling 100 million VND) to support and assist people in difficult circumstances. Mr. Nham mobilized 16 households to voluntarily donate land to expand the road boundary to build new rural areas. Mr. Huynh Van Bung (85 years old) took the lead in implementing, calling on and mobilizing everyone to follow, with a total area of ​​nearly 5 hectares and a length of about 1km...

Recognizing the importance of humanitarian social work, supporting poor families, especially those who are sick or have accidents, Mr. Nguyen Van Guong (residing in Phu Hiep hamlet, Cho Vam town, Phu Tan district) contributed 50 million VND, mobilizing people to buy free ambulances to serve poor patients. In addition, he supports money for the elderly with illnesses, participates in building charity houses... On average, he mobilizes 30 - 40 charity houses for the poor each year; mobilizes money to buy 3 free ambulances to the front line.

Participating in charity and social activities, although he is 92 years old, Mr. Doan Thanh Quang (Binh Thanh Dong commune, Phu Tan district) is still energetic. From 2010 to now, he has supported 2 gift packages for 150 poor households, each gift worth 200,000 - 250,000 VND. Over the years, he has contributed to the construction of dozens of bridges in the locality; participated in the bridge construction committee, regularly contributed funds to the road patching team in the commune; contributed to promoting education - promoting talents...

Speaking at the ceremony to receive the Certificate of Merit from the Provincial People's Committee for his outstanding achievements in the emulation movement "Old age - bright example", Mr. Doan Thanh Quang shared: "I want to actively promote the socialization of education to improve people's knowledge, train and foster human resources and talents for the country. Despite my old age, I still have a responsibility to society, especially taking care of poor children who love to study, helping them have more motivation to rise up. In addition, I also contribute money to build bridges and roads, support and help the poor and those in difficult circumstances... To contribute more to society and the country, that is my greatest ambition".

Mr. Doan Tri Hien (Deputy Head of the Phu Tan District Elderly Association) said that the district has 22,244 elderly people and 16,710 members. In recent times, the elderly have been very active in implementing the movement "Old age - bright example". Through their noble deeds and gestures, many exemplary elderly people have emerged, including Mr. Doan Thanh Quang and Nguyen Van Guong.

With the spirit of "Old age, high ambition", the elderly have been taking the lead in setting good examples in movements, spreading the spirit of patriotic emulation to every citizen, becoming good examples for the younger generation, contributing to building a more prosperous and beautiful homeland.
