(Dan Tri) - The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) has just elected 74 new academicians, including two Vietnamese professors, Nguyen The Hoang and Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai.
Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang, Deputy Director of 108 Central Military Hospital, was born in 1965, hometown in Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh.
He is known for his outstanding research on microvascular flap fabrication techniques for rehabilitation.
In 1999 he received the Johann Nepomuk von Nussbaum Prize of the German Society of Plastic Surgery for his original research on this subject.
He played a key role in the world's first double hand transplant in 2008. For this achievement, he was awarded the Karl Max von Bauernfeind Medal of the Technical University of Munich in 2008 and the APKO Award of the German Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2009.

In 2012, he received the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in recognition of his outstanding research achievements.
In 2020, he performed the first hand transplant from a living donor using the remains of an arm that had been irretrievably amputated. To date, no similar case has been reported in the world medical literature.
He was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Vietnam in 2006; received the degree of Doctor of Science in 2008 and Associate Professor of the University of Munich in 2009. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Professor.
Professor Hoang is the main author of more than 100 research works published in domestic and international journals, chairing and participating in many scientific research projects at the State and Ministry levels.
His scientific research focuses mainly on the fields of neovascularization and cell culture, free tissue flap transfer for microsurgery, treatment of complex congenital limb defects and organ transplantation.
In addition to many prestigious national and international scientific awards, in 2012, he received the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Science Award from the German Academy of Sciences Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for his outstanding research works with scientific breakthroughs.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, born in 1974, from Quang Ngai, graduated in chemistry from the University of General Sciences (now the University of Natural Sciences).
She then received her PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry from Toyama University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Japan.

She was appointed Associate Professor in 2014 and then Professor in 2021. In 2023, Professor Mai was awarded the title of Meritorious Teacher.
During the first 10 years after her PhD, she mainly focused on research in the field of drug discovery from Vietnamese medicinal herbs.
Recently, the female professor continued to conduct some applied research, completing 2 products to support digestive tract cancer and arthritis from domestic medicinal herbs. Up to now, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Mai has had more than 80 articles published in prestigious international scientific journals.
With research on products from bees raised in Vietnam, Professor Mai's research group won the Ho Chi Minh City Innovation Award in 2019.
The professor was awarded the 2021 Kovalevskaia Prize for female scientists with outstanding achievements in scientific research and practical application, bringing many benefits to life.
Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has published a paper on "Xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of Vietnamese medicinal plants," studying 288 extracts from 96 plants to treat gout, pioneering the combination of traditional Vietnamese medicine with modern science.
Research has discovered many new compounds, raw materials for the production of highly effective drugs to treat gout, diabetes, Alzheimer's, arthritis, stomach ulcers and cancer.
Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai has led 14 research projects and published 90 international articles and 80 national articles.
The World Academy of Sciences is an international non-governmental organization under UNESCO, bringing together more than 1,400 outstanding scientists from more than 100 countries and territories.
Of the 74 new academicians recognized this year, Brazil and China are the two countries with the most new academicians (10 people), followed by India (9 people), Malaysia (7 people), South Africa (4 people), Bangladesh, Morocco, Pakistan (3 people each); Vietnam, Cuba, Egypt, the United States (2 people each)...
