A study from the University of Rhode Island revealed that GPT-5 consumes unusually high power. Each 1,000-token GPT-5 response requires 40Wh of power, averaging 18.35Wh.
Meanwhile, GPT-4 only needs about 2.12Wh, which is up to 8.6 times lower. With more than 2.5 billion requests per day, GPT-5 can consume 45GWh of electricity, equivalent to the output of 2-3 nuclear reactors.
Microsoft Azure servers are said to be the main infrastructure running GPT-5. The team estimates GPT-5 runs on an Nvidia DGX H100 or H200 system. Although GPT-5 uses a more power-efficient mixture-of-experts architecture, advanced inference modes can increase consumption by 5-10 times.
Compared to DeepSeek R1 or OpenAI o3, GPT-5 is still the most power-hungry, raising major concerns about the environmental impact of AI. Dear readers, please watch more videos : From January 1, 2026, digital products created by AI must have identification marks | Nhan Dan Newspaper
