Yesterday (August 11), the World Football Federation (FIFA) officially announced that overseas Vietnamese player Do Nguyen Thanh Chung (international name Chung Nguyen Do) has completed the procedure to change his football nationality from Bulgaria to Vietnam.
This means that the midfielder born in 2005 is officially eligible to play for the Vietnam U23 team in major tournaments in 2025 such as the 2026 U23 Asian qualifiers (taking place in September), the 33rd SEA Games (taking place in December in Thailand), as well as at the national team level.

Notably, Chung Nguyen Do has just returned to Vietnam to play for Ninh Binh Club after playing in Bulgaria for Slavia Sofia. This is a promising contract as the player born in 2005 has made his mark in Bulgarian football.
Last season, this midfielder played 33 matches for Slavia Sofia and scored 2 goals. In the past, Chung Nguyen Do also played for Bulgaria at the U17, U19, U20 and U21 levels. This player was even planned to wear the Bulgarian national team shirt in the future, but in the end, he wanted to contribute to his homeland Vietnam.
According to Transfermarkt, Chung Nguyen Do is the most valuable U23 player in Southeast Asia at the moment with a price of 400,000 euros. If called up to the Vietnam national team, this 20-year-old player will be the third most expensive player after two other Vietnamese-American players, Jason Quang Vinh (500,000 euros) and Nguyen Filip (450,000 euros).
Chung Nguyen Do’s eligibility to play for the Vietnam national team at all levels is a good sign, especially when the 33rd SEA Games is only 4 months away. The striker born in 2005 is considered a breath of fresh air for the U23 Vietnam midfield if he is called up by coach Kim Sang Sik.
