Behind the Silver Award-winning photo series by photographer Dao Tien Dat

In 1983, poet Nguyen Ngoc Hung (born 1960, Quang Ngai province) was the valedictorian of Quy Nhon University, and was accepted by the Board of Directors of Nghia Hanh High School, Quang Ngai province, and assigned to be the homeroom teacher of class 11C. At this time, he suddenly suffered from muscular atrophy, paralysis of the whole body, and had to quit his job.

From 1988 to now, for nearly 37 years, he has been lovingly cared for by his school friend couple, Xuan Anh and Thu Ha (Quang Ngai province). Although he cannot walk or live on his own, he still perseveres in holding a pen in his cramped fingers, to “whisper” to poetry every day like a soul mate. While on his sickbed, poet Nguyen Ngoc Hung has published more than 10 poetry collections, winning many domestic and international awards.



Sharing about the opportunity with the photo series, NSNA Dao Tien Dat said that while being a judge of a photo contest in Quang Ngai in 2022, he met poet Hung during an exchange trip. Mr. Hung is a special member of the Quang Ngai Province Literature and Arts Association because of his extraordinary will to live and his admirable life story.

In 2024, when returning to Quang Ngai, NSNA Dao Tien Dat visited and presented poet Nguyen Ngoc Hung with a portrait taken in 2022. At the same time, he created a new photo series - "Modern Fairy Tales" to spread his will to live, as well as the enduring affection that Mr. Xuan Anh and Mrs. Thu Ha have had for their friend for nearly four decades.
