Gateway of trade
Nam Giang Border Gate Economic Zone was invested and built in 2006 with a total area of about 34,160 hectares. In 2021, the Nam Giang (Quang Nam) - Dac Ta Ooc (Sekong) international border gate pair was opened, creating favorable conditions for cooperation between Vietnam and Laos and connecting with countries in the ASEAN economic region.
Provincial Party Secretary Luong Nguyen Minh Triet affirmed that one of the key tasks and breakthroughs in the Quang Nam Provincial Planning for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050, is to improve competitiveness, promote the dynamic role and competitive advantages of the Nam Giang International Border Gate Economic Zone.
To achieve this goal, Quang Nam identified promoting comprehensive cooperation with the southern provinces of Laos and focusing on economic and logistics cooperation with the northeastern region of Thailand as important tasks. This is the premise for developing the Nam Giang International Border Gate Economic Zone into a logistics economic zone, in which warehousing, sorting, packaging, and transit activities are promoted.
According to Secretary - Governor of Sekong Province Lech-lay Si-vi-lay, from Da Nang deep-water port, Chu Lai port (Quang Nam) to the international border gate pair Nam Giang - Dac Ta Ooc, the length is 260km, the transit time is 5 hours.
Meanwhile, from Se Kong to Vang Tau International Border Gate, Xoong Mec and ending at Lem Xa Bang deep-water port (Thailand) is 877km long, taking up to 16 hours. Thus, the circulation of goods through the Nam Giang - Dac Ta Ooc international border gate pair shortens the time and saves much more costs.
Da Nang City authorities are also very interested in developing the Nam Giang - Dac Ta Ooc international border gate pair.
Mr. Le Trung Chinh - Chairman of Da Nang City People's Committee affirmed that the East - West international corridor road through the Nam Giang - Dac Ta Ooc international border gate pair will shorten the transit distance of goods from the provinces of Southern Laos and Eastern Thailand to Da Nang port for export to countries in the region.
Da Nang City is strengthening activities to promote the development of the logistics sector, connecting investment to the provinces of South Central Laos and Thailand.
Quang Nam is determined to speed up the investment progress and upgrade the infrastructure of Nam Giang International Border Gate, such as investing in the construction of public housing; wharves, parking lots for controlling import and export goods; modern technical equipment...
By 2029, the investment, upgrading and expansion of the entire National Highway 14D will be completed according to the prescribed criteria and standards. Along with the Nam Giang - Dac Ta Ooc international border gate pair, Quang Nam will focus on investing in infrastructure at the Tay Giang - Ka Lum secondary border gate. By 2050, Tay Giang Border Gate and DT606 route will meet the prescribed criteria and standards to be upgraded to an international border gate.
Positive signal
Southern Laos is identified as an area with fertile land and an undisturbed ecological environment, suitable for developing clean and sustainable agricultural and forestry economic models.
The cost of land transfer and labor hire in this area is still relatively low. This potential has been surveyed, invested in and developed by many Quang Nam enterprises in recent years. The leader in this field is THACO.
Truong Hai Agricultural Joint Stock Company (under THACO) is operating in the agricultural production sector, implementing a large-scale agricultural and forestry development investment strategy on an area of over 27,000 hectares in two provinces in Attapeu and Sekong (Laos). Including a 10,000-hectare specialized fruit tree growing area, 14,000 hectares of fruit tree growing combined with cattle raising; a 200-hectare industrial production and processing area...
Mr. Tran Ba Duong - Chairman of THACO Board of Directors said that the group has completed the production process, growing tropical fruit trees such as mango, grapefruit, durian and especially specializing in banana and pineapple cultivation.
By the end of this year, THACO will have 1,000 tons of fresh fruit per day for export. And by 2025, it will reach the target of 2,000 tons/day; in which the majority of agricultural products and fruits come from Southern Laos.
This will also be a source of raw materials for deep processing at the agricultural industrial center in Chu Lai in the future. With this enterprise's strategy of prioritizing convenient routes from Southern Laos to Chu Lai, the Nam Giang - Dac Ta Ooc international border gate pair will certainly be effective.
Along with agricultural and forestry products, the Nam Giang Border Gate Economic Zone will be the gateway for exporting minerals and electricity to Laos. Secretary - Governor of Sekong Province Lech-lay Si-vi-lay said that the province is implementing projects to exploit ore, coal, bauxite, iron; 3 hydropower projects and 1 600MW wind power project, the largest in Asia.
Recently, the Nam Giang - Dac Ta Ooc international border gate pair has been put into operation, helping Se Kong import machinery, equipment, supplies, construction materials, and repair of hydropower projects; at the same time, transit cassava starch, bauxite aluminum ore to Da Nang port, Chan May port and Chu Lai port for export to China.
For Champasak province, in 2023, the export turnover will reach 468.29 million USD; the main export goods are cassava, coffee, rubber... Secretary - Governor of Champasak province Vi-lay-vong But-da-kham hopes that Quang Nam will invest in traffic infrastructure connecting the Nam Giang - Dac Ta Ooc international border gate pair to Chu Lai port so that Champasak goods can be exported quickly and effectively. This is also an opportunity for Champasak to attract more large enterprises to invest.
